I might be drafting up an update letter for several schools I got waitlisted on soon, and among a couple other more significant accomplishments, I was thinking of including my planned 40-day trip to Spain as sort of an "Oh, by the way" thing at the end of the letter. I am a very young applicant who has never been abroad before and I thought that it might help demonstrate that I have accumulated some "life experience," etc.

Is this stupid? (It wouldn't be the centerpiece of the letter; it would follow two real accomplishments.)

I'm not sure the travel is relevant, despite your rationale.
