HBCU would be a waste of time applying unless you have an extremely strong record regarding the under served and minorities.

I would still apply DO. There are no guarantees in today's world.

Why would you recommend a non AA to apply to HBCUs...?

Why would it be a waste? I am actually planning on low/mid range DO schools for my 5-10 DO schools.

I would think that a cGPA of almost 3.6 and a sGPA of nearly 3.3 plus a 33 MCAT would be extremely competitive at DO schools. That's what Goro told me.

And I think my ECs are at least above average.

this is horrible advice. While it is possible he will get into an MD, a 3.2/3.3 science GPA will make it quite an uphill battle. You are underestimating how UN-forgiving most MD schools are with low GPA's. HBCU's are for URM's, Wright State mainly takes from Ohio, and RFU is a giant crapshoot.

There were plenty of people this year, 3.5-3.7/30-32 that applied and got shut out of MD schools. I'm talking no interviews.

However, solid EC's will definitely help him.

I REALLY want to get in on my first try, so DOs will be a FOCUS. 10 schools that are "mid-tier" should do it, no?
 
Go ahead and apply to 5-10 DO schools instead of 5-10+ extra MD schools. Just don't make a thread in July asking if you should take your DO acceptance (if you get one) or reapply MD.

I don't really care/have any. Any DO school is good enough except Rocky Vista, since that's a for-profit school.

I am definitely applying to Goro's school.

Great advice. Many people still don't get how vicious it is out there. Nothing is for sure anymore.
 
He said in another thread "one of my colleagues over at Touro-CA" which would imply not Touro-CA, but maybe he's a sneak and just did that to mislead people?
 
Mention a long held passion for Mortal Kombat in all of your Personal Statements. The school that accepts you will be Goro's.

I'm glad you guys think you're super smart and all, but I sat on the adcom at my school as an MS1 and I'm quite sure I have a better handle on all of this than you.

While I'm sure your experience is appreciated, since you didn't sit on the adcom for every school you listed, I think I'm still going to trust the advice that says non-URM probs shouldn't apply to HBCUs...

we have been spending months on end applying to many places, and plenty of people have been sharing have been sharing their application cycles here. I think we know what we're talking about.

Would a mid/late June submission of AACOMAS primary be considered early?

My expectation with my stats is simply acceptance into ANY DO school. I am not aiming for anything in particular.

I am confident that my stats can still get me something in 2014/2015. Maybe in 2025, DO averages will approach 40, but for now, I think I am fine.

So what you're saying is that this chart saying about 68% admittance rate is lying or what? A 32% chance to be SOL seems reasonable enough for anyone to consider applying both MD and DO schools. Besides, you're absolutely wrong about HBCU. If you sat on the adcom at your school, probably you have credibility for your school, but by your statements, you have no credibility for general advice.

That's good, because the zeitgeist is here. There have been many threads about people being recognized in real life with mixed results.

In case I look like a hyprocrite, my username is the name of my first bichon frisé. I've already had people ask me if it's my real name too and how they know a Victoria H from somewhere....nope.

I'm saying that the mean is most useful given a normal distribution. In recent years my school has matriculated students mainly +/- 0.5 SD from the mean. I don't know the statistical term, but the graph looks like a camel.

Yes as you say this could be true for only my school, but I doubt it.

You mean a bimodal distribution? That's not surprising given the distribution of DO schools having either low or high stats, very few being truly middle.

A .5 +\- dist probably somewhat normal with some skew. Not sure why this is an issue tho.

I go to a top 10 MD school. Bimodal (thank you) should be surprising now.

I would prefer to apply to 15 schools, but the amount of time and money (and the fact that i'll be applying to MD schools as well) it will take probably means that I have to cap out at 10 DOs.

And I will be sending out both my MD and DO primaries in June, to maximize my chances for both.
