Hi,

I have heard that there are is a lot of opportunity to do IMEs (Independent Medical Exams). Since these are paid by an outside source e.g. insurance companies, then I would imagine that the pay rate would be high. Any idea how much physiatrists generally get paid for these. Thanks.

We actually had an attending talk with us about life after residency and he mentioned IMEs. In MA, Physiatrists are paid $700-$800 for completing an Independent Medical Exam. We also got some numbers for how much you get from Medicare for consults and new outpatients. You get $193.19 for an inpatient consult; $176.12 for a new outpatient; and $224.72 for an outpatient consult. The reimbursement for 2003 was down about 15% from 2002. Many of us thought it was interesting that you get paid much more for an oupatient consult. We were also told that malpractice for Physiatry was one of the lowest out there. The Physiatrists in MA pay about $4000 per year.
