Hello everybody,

I am new to this forum and I am excited to see many dentists from India.
I recently got married and came to US on H4 visa.
I am starting this thread for Indian dentists who also have a family to take care of. I am preparing for NBDE part 1 but not doing it in a organised way, as part of my time goes in doing the regular chores. I know there are many in a situation like mine or have been in a situation like this. It would be really nice if you all can express your views about managing your time and also about how you all motivate yourself to study hard.

Thanks.

I am also in a similar situation. Though I dont have any suggestions to give right now. We can always disscuss if you are interested.

Hi Gold,

I m alos on H4 Visa , i came just few months back.

One way its really difficult to have a family and study , but thaat is what life is....v have tocope with that...I also had the same problem.

From my experience i will tell u shd first make up ur mind and decide when u r planning to give the exam...Two months are more then enough for part1.

U set up a goal of completeing some 30 decks per day...u have to if u want enough time for revision.u can avoid some chores when ur husband comes..sou can talk and do ...u will feel better after studying and then doing work~~~U set a goal of completeing one subject per week ...or 10 days for the first time...

👍 all the best ....i hope i was helpful some way...

Hi rythm_rhymes,

Thank you very much for your reply. I really liked your advice and I am sure its going to help me.

Thanks again.

Hi nbc and s_chahal,

I am sure it will help to some extent if we can discuss and study.
We could exchange our email addresses and discuss our study plan through emails. how does this sound? My email address is [email protected]

Send me an e mail if you are interested.
Others are also welcome to join the group study if interested.

Thanks again for your replies.

Hi,
I understand that it is too tough to have a family and study. I could not get focused. I work full-time and study only 3 hrs a day. Sometimes I feel stupid as I am not able to score in Part-1. But self-confidence and determination has not died.

i know it gets tough.... but its not impossible.. im sure your family will understand that u have to study too.... allocate certain hours of the day when u just have to study,,... everything else fallls into place....
get up early .. do all ure work in about 2-3 hours... u have the rest of the day free.. evenings agai u can spend time with family... u still get like 6-7 hours a day....min to put in work.
all the best

tht true....
another idea i can give u guys is tht , do some bulk cooking during the weekends or ask ur spouses for help.
a good way to concentrate is to go to a library or a bookstore and read thr. once u get started u wont have any trouble at all.
if u feel its difficult, it is going to b difficult. think this is acheivable and u can make it work , thn u will surely be able to get to ur goal.
good luck folks :luck:

i agree with Ann..
going to the library really helps..a t home ull always find 101 chores to do...

If think preparing is tough with family , going to dental school is even more tougher !!But ,most of my classmates have small children and still they are managing dental school . Try to get into school as soon as possible bcoz
every year its getting more tougher and u never know when the rules change !!all the Best !!!

varsha ,
to be honest , u should definately retake part 1.
when i had scored 83 the first time , everyone told me that apply atleasttot NYU.. ull definately manage to get in... cause last year people with 81 did get in...
but just look at the competition this year.. peopel with 87 are already waitlisted..... so forget being called for an interview if u have less than 85.
each year the competition is increasing to get into an international student programme.
sorry.. dont meant o sound too hard ...
i know its tough with a baby to look after.... maybe u could keep ure baby at childcare... dont know how old.. thats how most of the people i know with kids have managed....
i know its tough.... but ure options are either take out time to study .. or let ure baby grow up a bit and once they start going to school.., then think about getting back to studies...
prob giving unasked for advice....
just a suggestion...

hi

i sincerely feel u shd take part1 again ,not to discourage u but situation is like that .thats why i keep telling whoever asks me "dont delay ,more u delay more tougher its going to be "!! i can understand ur problem with a little kid but u can think of options like bringing ur parents for 2-3 months or
sending ur kind for 2-3 months to india and preparing urself for the exam might help !!

well.. its ure deciison.
i had given CBT .. i found no probs with it.
its ure luck what u get.. some get really easy papers with lot of repeats, some get no repeats.
IF URE WELL PREPARED , IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE.
the advantage with PBT is as everyone gets the same papaer , u are sure that the score u get is curved on the general performance of the group giving the exam at the same time ...
adv of CBT is u can schedule ure exam anytime and u get ure scores very fast.

Hi,

I am an Dentist from India and Currently I am on H4 in US, I have recently moved to US, so I dont know what are the options fro me to do here. I found one thing which is DDS, but its hard to get in to it, so I would like to know if there is any other thing I can do like cosmetic dentistry or any other certificate courses which are easy and quick to atleast start something.

Thanks in Advance.

Two things that most definitely don't go together would be "easy" and "dentistry" (at least for foreign trained dentists) in the US. Sorry to be the one to break the news!

It's a long, widening and seemly never ending road.....

Hi,
I can see ur anxious to do smthing other thn DDS. but thts ryt tht its hard for foreign trained dentists . u have to give nbde n toefl and apply except if you want to go for mph or oral biology.you cannot practise without license so no point of any cosmetic dentistry course or smthing lik tht. sad but true point thing is nbde is the only way to practise dentistry. so make up ur mind, do ur research n strt off. the early the better. atlst thts wat ive learnt in a year of stay in h4 in us...gud luk
