hey everyone,

I recently just got denied from Indiana University dental school. I'm not really sure why and neither are my counselors or anyone else I've really talked to. I'll give you guys my gpa and DAT scores and let me know what you guys think my chaces are for other schools. I'm getting kinda worried because I go to IU and my own state school rejected me. Is it worth my time to apply to other schools or is it too late?

I got a 16 on PAT, 19 on total science, and a 19 overall. My gpa is a 3.5. It might just be me, but I thought I would at least get an interview at that school. Also, I have a close friend that got an overall 20 on the DAT and has a 3.99, he was denied a fall interview and is scheduled for spring...when the chances of getting in are pretty difficult. I applied on AADSAS in July but sent in my DAT scores at the very beginning of september, could that be why I wasnt given an interview? Thanks for the help.

I know they have a minimum cutoff for the DAT. I think if I recall correctly it is 17's? However, I also know that they make exceptions. Which tells me that they are also looking at the rest of your application. How are your EC's? Do you have lot's of shadowing, volunteering, etc or more of the did some so I could put it on my app, but didn't do that much? No disresepect intended in that last comment. Finally, timing is a HUGE part of the application process. I'm a reapplicant, and last year I applied real late, I ended up with 4 interviews although I applied to 15 schools. This year I applied super early and I ended up with 8 interviews and applied to 12 schools and 2 of the schools don't require interviews. So there is some stuff to think about. Oh, one more thing...Indiana encourages applicants to call them, (this is straight from the Director of Admissions mouth) therefore I believe you could call them and get some possible answers. Good Luck.

My application is on "hold" but they told me that I needed above a 16 in every section and above an 18 in reading comprehension to be considered for an interview.

Interesting considering their whole class averaged a 17.8 AA last year

yea. to op: those stats arent good enough, unless youre from instate.

I don't think stats are your problem, more likely your timing. I know you got the app in early..but they don't consider it complete until DAT scores are in. Indiana gets the ball rolling pretty early and your late DAT was holding your app.

I still am a little surprised that you were outright rejected though if you are instate. I would call and ask what you can do to improve your app. And yes, apply to other schools, it isn't too late yet (for some schools). Just do a little research and make sure you aren't late and are competitive.

Good luck.

seriously, if youre not instate those stats arent good enough. thats a fact.

Well, raapatel did say that IU was his/her state school. I don't think people really say that unless they're in-state.

i totally missed that. yea, i'd be hella-pissed dood.

i don't know if this helps or not, but usually Indiana does have a "16 or above" policy on all aspects of the DAT. As far as spring interviews go, I had plenty of in-staters in my class that didn't interview till spring and still got in. In fact, two of my classmates interviewed on the last day of interviews and got in. You also have to realize that we saw interviewees as early as the end of September which means they've been going over applications for awhile...so obviously, the earlier you get it in, the better chance you have for one of the few fall interview spots whether you are in or out of state (i'm an out-of-stater).

By the way, maybe the average for the interviewing class was 17.8, but for the actual matriculating class, our average on the DAT was a either a 20 or 21 to give you an idea of the varying stat there.
