I'm not sure where I have heard this, but I heard that IU is mostly a research school? Is that the case? Or do they have a decent clinical exposure, as well? Please respond! This will pretty much determine if I will spend the $300 to interview there! Thanks!

My optometrisit went there. It is a clinical oriented school. Howeve,r b.c it is a college town, you don't see anything spectacular just very routine eye exams, b.c most college kids aren't going to have anything to crazy. So basically if you want to see really cool pathology I'd apply to a bigger city. I love my optometrist thought and she's awesome at waht she does, so they have to be doing something right!🙂

At my interview they told me that since they are a state school they have eye research programs. They said that they are becoming the leading facility in optometric research (on the cutting edge) and take that knowledge and those findings into the classroom and incorporate that into what they teach. However, they do not force optometry students to become overly involved with research...they do focus on the clinical aspect more. As was stated before they do not have an "exotic" patient base...you won't see alot of the weird stuff. I chose ICO over IU for this reason mostly...there were other things too. Hope this helps!

You'll see a lot of red eyes at the school, which is nice. Keep in mind, the school has two clinics in Bloomington, one at the school and one in a less well-off area. At the other clinic you see quite a bit of pathology. You also see quite a bit of pathology at the school's clinic in Indianapolis.
