Hi,

What exactly is the difference between a pharmacist in industry vs. a pharmaceutical sales rep (besides the training)? Pharmacists are also able to work in marketing and sales in industry. I would think pharmD/mba individuals would be in more of a management role of sales rep??? I'm having some trouble finding this info online. Any insights would be greatly appreciate it!
Thanks!

I meant Industry in the title... can anyone edit the title?? I know how to spell lol

From my experience in working in industry, I didn't really even see the 2 jobs relating much at all. The pharmacists were in many different areas, like drug safety. There were a few PharmDs on the business side of things as heads of dept, I would assume these were people holding their MBA. I'm kinda confused on why you would put yourself through the extra training just to a hold a job that didn't requre it?

I changed the title for you. My first time ever so pretty exciting...lol.

If I have the terminology correct, industry refers to research typically in drug development at a large company like Pfizer. You would need a PharmD or more preferably a PhD. A sales rep is someone who goes around to doctors' offices and tries to get them to prescribe their drug. I think all you need for that is a hs diploma.

Ah ok, thanks!

I was a bit confused when I read on the AACP's website about pharmacists in industry (particularly the part about sales & marketing)-
"Pharmacists in industry do such things as marketing, research and product development, quality control, sales, and administration. Many pharmacists go on to obtain postgraduate degrees in order to meet the technical demands and scientific duties required in pharmaceutical manufacturing."

I'm not interested in sales... just curious on what's the difference after reading from the website (im actually interested in academia or regulatory pharm if you're curious).
Yep, heads of departments... that's what I'm thinking too. I can see how marketing would fit. Seems like the sales rep are the ones doing the field work but the pharmDs are the one managing and making decisions.

Thanks for changing the title
