Info on Univ North Texas (TCOM) Medical Masters

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats to all those working hard on their MedSci degree =)

Question from a future applicant:

is TCOM equally favored by both DO and MD programs? or do MD programs prefer SMPs geared towards MD schools and not DO (if such a thing even exists).

Thanks!

Hey there hei

I'm having a bit a trouble understanding your question. So let me try to clarify a couple of things about the Med Sci program. I'm currently a Med Sci 2011 student.

I assume when you are talking about TCOM, you are referring to the Osteopathic medicine program at the UNT Health Science Center. The Med Sci program or Medical Sciences is a specialized masters program run through the graduate school within the health science center.

The Med Sci program is not a "DO" SMP. Its just an SMP. You take many of the same classes that first year medical students take. But since the SMP is at an osteopathic institution, you receive a bit of exposure to osteopathic medicine and its principals.

My experiences with the 2011 med school cycle is that medical schools don't really care where you do your SMP. I have been interviewed at several MD texas schools. They didn't show any preference.

I hope that answers your question.

This master's program is equally favored by MD and DO programs. I interviewed at MD schools last year & they didn't bat an eye when i mentioned the program---in other words, they were very familiar with the program....

a ton of ppl from my class of 2010 are in MD and DO schools... sooo... yep, they know the program is good & like interviewing the students in the program.

So I'm starting to worry if I'll be getting into medical school this application cycle since I turned in my app early and haven't heard anything yet.. I'm looking into this SMP - it looks so awesome!

My stats: Biochem major
uGPA: 3.1 (last 60 hrs ~3.7)
MCAT: 29Q (PS:10, V:8, BS:11)
Extra Currs: Research experience in 2 different labs, Premed organization officer, volunteering experience, EMT-basic (completed at night school during Spring '09 on top of regular biochem course load)

I kind of have a few general questions about SMP (not familiar with it!)

1. I think my GPA is definitely what I need to work on and prove to adcom that I can handle the work in med school. Do you guys think this program will help convey that?

2. I already applied to every TMDSAS school, and for TCOM, received my EUID. To apply for this SMP, is there some place to enter the USID? Or do you fill out the application and they match up your name with the EUID they have on file?

3. For the letters of eval, my school has a letter service (I opted out of the review committee portion however - not sure if that matters). My letters were for a medical school recommendation, but do I need to have my professors/mentors write more specific letters for this Masters program?

Thanks for your help everyone! Great thread!

1. Understand that the medical masters program will only give you a grad school GPA. The program is really designed for people who have low MCAT/higher GPA. But it is still a great way to prove yourself to adcoms. By earning a 3.5 grad GPA you have a great way to show your potential for a TCOM acceptance. Even though you have a great upward trend in GPA, your overall GPA is holding you back. The OOS DO schools tend to be more forgiving of GPA compared with the Texas schools. Also remember that when you do apply next year, you won't have any grad schools grades until the end of the Fall semester.

2. The application is separate from the TMDSAS app. You need to goto the GSBS admission website.

3. Just use your medical school LORs. The letters dont need to be specific for the Med Sci program. BTW I would recommend getting a pre med letter committee packet from your ugrad for the next med school app cycle. It makes applying to various programs much easier. Its not required though.

If I were in your situation, I would strongly consider applying to several DO schools out of state along with the Texas schools for the next cycle. As always submit your applications early as possible.

Let me know if you have any questions. I was in a similar situation like yours about a year ago. I formulated a plan and got accepted to several OOS DO schools. My Mdapps has more info.

Hi guys I am new here and I'm applying to the medical sciences program. I know that eventually from what I've seen a thread for the 2011-2012 program will be made, but anyways I have almost all my things in regards to supporting documentation. I missed the medical school application cycle for this year because I was technically in another program, which wasn't for me and then had various health issues that severely affected my studies so I had to take some time off to get better. Hope to meet some of you guys soon that are also applying. By the way, I know this thread hasn't been active in over a month, but what exactly does "Rolling admissions" mean? I saw that on the med sci unt-hsc website so does that mean the sooner you get everything in the sooner you will know whether you got accepted. Also, they start reviewing applications in January.

Thanks for any input.

rolling admissions = they make decisions on applications as they review them

Wow, thats different from last year. I am a current Med Sci and we did not have our files reviewed on a first come first serve basis, they just waited till they had everyone's files first and then reviewed them.

With that said, I would most definitely get your stuff in ASAP. This program is becoming really popular, they increased our class size to about 150-160, when the previous years class was about 90-100. I believe this program does help you get into medical school. I know several people in my class, including myself, who have pre match offers to Texas medical schools, most of us are reapplicants but there are people that are applying for the first time too. If you have any questions, please feel free to PM me. I would be more than glad to help 🙂

Congrats Sugar87! I just happened to still have my subscription to this thread -- so excited that you are officially going to be a DOCTOR! That must feel amazing! 🙂 You deserve it.

So with a low GPA (2.99 TMDSAS) and high mcat (36), is unt's smp a good option for me?

I do know of people who have TMDSAS GPA's ~3.0 and high MCAT scores that have gotten into medical school and I know some people who have similar stats that did not get in. With that said, if you decide to do this program and get admitted, I would HIGHLY recommend applying early, you are at an advantage because you will not have to take the MCAT course over the summer since you have an awesome MCAT score 🙂. Also, your performance in the program will be VERY important since your GPA is not as high...no worries though, if you can succeed in the program and stay in touch with the schools and continue to show them you really want to be doctor, I would say you have a good chance, but that is my personal opinion. Are you a reapplicant or will this be your first time applying?

Hey! I'm a current med sci and I think the program is a good option to try to raise your GPA. If you pursue it, make sure you put everything in to it so you can prove to them that you can handle the classes. Good luck!

Do they have rolling admissions this year? I saw that someone mentioned it earlier in this thread. Last year, we all found out at the same time in mid-April. If they did change it to rolling admissions, definitely get it in early. It sucks trying to arrange things to move to a different city in 3 weeks!

Hey this is what I found on the UNTHSC GSBS Admissions website...so it is definitely rolling admissions...that is different from last year, yea moving within a month of you finding out you've been accepted is a pain in the butt so get it turned in early guys!!!! 🙂

Important:
All GSBS admissions committees now review files on a rolling basis. The earlier your application file is complete, the sooner your file will be reviewed and a decision issued. Admission reviews for Medical Sciences applications for Summer 2011 will not begin until January 2011 and must include Fall 2010 transcripts with grades for applicants who are enrolled in course work during the Fall 2010 semester.

Are you a reapplicant or will this be your first time applying?

I applied for the current cycle, but only interviewed at San Antonio. I know that match isn't here yet, but I have a bad feeling, and want to make sure I exercise all options.

That sounds a lot like me. I applied last cycle and only got interviewed at SA. It didn't turn out well for me so my adviser recommended the medical masters.
I'm hoping it turns out well for you though. SA has an awesome school

Hey Guys, for anyone applying to this program or thinking of applying it appears that the rolling admissions is true, my app has already been listed as complete as 12/22 and they start reviewing in Jan. Hope those waiting for match get good news!

My apologies if these questions have already been asked, but:

1) Would I be at a disadvantage for this program taking my MCAT in January (score release March 1st)?
2) How difficult is it to gain admission to TCOM by the end of the program if one manages a respectable GPA during the year?

1) I'm not sure if you would be at a disadvantage. It depends on what score you get on the MCAT and your current GPA. If your applying for this year, take the MCAT asap. Many applicants submit their applications around February and march. Often people apply to the program as a backup in case they didn't get anywhere by the time the Match or are waitlisted at OOS schools. Go for it.
2) When your in the med sci program you will be competing with the other people in your class for the TCOM slots instead of the general applicant pool. Keep in mind there are approx 150 med sci slots and I heard that they might be increasing the class size. I heard that TCOM admissions saves around 30-50 slots for med sci. But don't quote me on that. Best advice is to apply DO OOS, Texas, and a few MD OOS if you have the numbers. Save some load money for the application spending spree!! Many of your classmates will end up getting into other Texas schools so its still possible you have a chance. In summary, its difficult even with a good GPA (3.5+). Cover your bases by applying OOS.

Hey guys, I plan on applying for the SMP at TCOM for this upcoming summer. Can you give me your opinion and let me know if I fit the program?

My numbers:
cGPA- currently 2.75
BCPM- ~2.6
MCAT- 24O (after this score I enrolled in a Kaplan course and will hopefully bring it up)

STRONG extracurriculars, Research (astronomy and virology), worked full-time first 2 years of college and continue to work, compelling personal statement, and good LORs.

Do i stand to benefit from the program? I anticipate my GPA to be around 2.9 upon graduation. Let me know! Thanks!

When do you plan on retaking the MCAT? I know people who got into med school this year with 2.9-3.0 GPA but they had high MCAT scores, (31+) along with extenuating circumstances which seems like you may have...My advice to you would be to bring your undergrad GPA as high as possible, I don't know what the average stats for the people who got accepted into the med sci program, I know that they did accept people with a broad range of MCAT/GPA combo's, just not sure how broad, you definately need to focus on the MCAT which it seems like you are doing with the prep course and all....also, if you do get accepted into the program, you need to make it your priority and work your tail off to make a high GPA (3.8+). I hope this helps, PM if you have any specific questions.

Has anybody heard back from admissions yet on an acceptance? This rolling admissions is coming as a complete surprise to me! I'm just wondering if they've actually started reviewing/accepting applicants.

Hey everyone!
I'm a current MedSci as well, so if you have any questions feel free to message me! 🙂

Not sure if this is the most apt place to post, but I am wondering if doing a SMP would be the most beneficial for someone like me.

I applied this past cycle (3rd time) to TMDSAS and a handful of AMCAS schools, from which I had only one interview (TCOM) and am currently on the waitlist for. There is still the possibility of being accepted through the waitlist, but it isn't anything to bank on. So I am wondering whether I should apply for the SMP at UNTHSC.

The main deterrent for me is that I have been working in a small (me + PI) research lab for the last 1.5 years and he is hoping to publish soon, so if I leave in the next few months, I'd feel as though I were throwing him under the bus. In the time that I've been there, I feel as though I haven't learned anything which, compounded with a subpar communicative ability on the PI's part, adds to my desire to move on.

As for my stats, I'd say they are modest to average (though ECs are a little lacking) for those accepted in Texas schools (which is where I would prefer to attend):
cGPa: 3.6, sGPA: 3.5
MCAT (one-time 2007): 30
ECs: 100+ hrs hospital volunteering, 5-week Summer Cultural Exchange Program in China, Basic Research (post-grad)

I am mulling my options right now. I was thinking of re-taking the MCAT in May/June and applying very early in the upcoming cycle. Or maybe doing a SMP. Any helpful insights/suggestions would be much appreciated.

Hi everybody,

I applied for the master of medical sciences program at UNT for the 2011 year about a month and a half ago. The folks at GSBS admissions have told me that they are currently processing my application and that I should expect a confirmation e-mail "soon" containg a GSBS issued user name/password which I can use to check the completeness/status of my application. Its been about two weeks since I spoke with them and no word yet. Can some one please help me with the following questions:

(1) From the time you were told that your application was being processed how long did it take to recieve the e-mail I described above?

(2) When they say they are processing your application does it mean they are reviewing it and in the the process of making a descision?

(3) According to UNT admissions this year are on a rolling basis, based on my timeline how soon can I expect a response about my application?

Thanks for the help people 🙂 and good luck to everyone that is applying!

1. It could take a while for them to process, a week or more.
2. They have to receive enough applications before the committee to sit to review the applications. The committee has not met yet.
3. If your application is complete, you can start hearing sometime in March. At the latest you will hear by April 15th.

Thanks 🙂

Hey there medsci hopefuls... it seems like just yesterday I was applying to this program. Since I used previous the previous years posters for information I thought I would post my experience for ya'll to dwell on..

About me (i m gonna keep this general if you really want specific PM me)
UG GPA low 3.1ish Sciences 3.2ish MCAT 28R
Lots of EC volunteering, athletics and lots of research and publications
Good Letters (I have been told)

Applied mostly to DO schools (first time applicant)
applied to 8 OOS interviewed at 6 and haven't heard from 2 (silent rejections I assume) + automatic interview at TCOM--> withdrew b/c not from Texas and got into state DO school.

Accepted to 3 and waitlisted at 3 others

My take on the program: The faculty and staff for the most part is very friendly and caring and mostly wants to help. I would say the professors are hit or miss some are very good (Dr. Gwirtz the PD is great and few others are pretty solid) and some are terrible (as an example one of the professors was so unintelligible several of my classmates had to take the time to make transcripts so the rest of the class could understand -- other professors in my opinion just should not be professors). As far the the course work/load goes, its really not that bad there are some people who study all the time and others like me who pre-test cram and do just as well. There are class your gonna love (for me Gross Anatomy) and classes your gonna hate (Epidemiology is taught by a professors who is truly terrible and obviously hates to teach, Clinical Research and Ethics are epic wastes of time). One thing I have been disappointed in is that most of the classes are "Med school like"...maybe 60-70% of what med students get, where other SMPs get the real deal which I think would be much better for preparation.

Did this program help me get in? Absolutely and Emphatically NO! In fact two open file interviewers at 2 different schools asked my specifically why I "wasted my time with this program." Others programs congratulated me on doing the program but admitted they knew very little about it. Additonally I had submitted, interviewed and been accepted before any of my grades were released (not the schools fault at all, just my luck).

Did this program help others get in? Definitely students with already decent stats (~3.5 and 30ish) but for some reason didn't get in last year... many of them have gotten into Texas MD schools (TT-El Paso and UTSA seem to really like well rounded students from our program). As well several DO schools have wait listed a lot of our students and said that if they get X.XX GPA in the program there in! So it definitely does help some!

Would I do it again? Yes! Even though it probably didn't help much getting in I can tell it definitely will help when I am in med school.

Have been through the application process now and almost done with SMP, ill now tell you what I learned:

1. Don't fool yourself if you have low stats YOU NEED TO BRING YOUR UG GPA up, I got slammed over and over again for my low GPA. This may mean doing more UG classes and not SMP but I promise it will pay huge dividends However if you have alot of hours it maybe next to impossible to bring your UG GPA up so you may have to

2. IF your gonna do this program you have a 27 or to get out of the MCAT class, if not you have to take MCAT which can significantly delay your APP so if its possible KILL the MCAT B4 you start!!!!

3. A continuation of part 2: APPLY EARLY!!! I cannot stress this enough; this is one of the few parts of the app process you can control SO TAKE CONTROL!!

I have tried my best to provide a fair generalized evaluation of the program but if you have any specific q's fire away!!

Thanks 🙂

The entering students for the TCOM class of 2010 had an average GPA of 3.52 and an MCAT of 28. So for the UNT program you know it is lower than that. I would say most people that get in to the UNT program will have between 3.0 -3.5 gpa and somewhere in the mid 20's on the MCAT.

I think the average is usually around 25ish. But I do know some people in our class who scored pretty high on the MCAT. But I wouldnt let the average MCAT/GPA discourage you. There are plenty of people in the program who had high and low MCAT/GPAs and they got into the program and are also getting into medical school. Also, I know that if you have an upward trend in your last 60 hours of undergrad they really like that. If anyone has any questions about the program and what not send me a message. I am a Texas resident so my take may be a little different than the above post. Good luck and I hope you all get in!!!

Hi ya'll

I am still waiting on the confirmation email from GSBS about the status/completeness of my application. Just quickly though, based on some of your previous experiences does receipt of this email mean that you've basically been admited into the program? As you can probably imagine I'm very anxiously awaiting a decision from GSBS. Thanks once again! 🙂

Check your application status page under My HSC. That page will tell you if you get admitted or waitlisted. They will also send you a formal letter in the mail if you get accepted.

Good luck:luck:

Nardini46,

Thanks for the response. According to the person at GSBS that I spoke to yesterday I should be getting the email by end of business today. You mentioned that the My HSC page will indicate whether or not I was admitted I guess my follow up question is will I be able to find out this information today (the same day that I "should" be recieving this long awaited email). Thanks 🙂

Login with your EUID to access your application. Should also let you access your application status.

You won't be accepted until the committee meets to review your file. As far as I know, the committee hasn't met yet. I haven't heard of anyone being accepted yet to this program. I could be wrong though.

I got accepted to the program today. They updated my status online and said a formal letter is coming in the mail. Good luck to everyone else that applied to this program!

I submitted 2/15.
MCAT: 26
cGPA: 3.7
sGPA: 3.5

They are admitting on rolling admissions so if you application is in then you should hear something soon.

Uggh! I hate playing the waiting game! I Guess it could be worse. Could have to wait til mid april like last years class. 🙂

Congrats on your acceptance jlb your stats are quite impressive! I still haven't recieved any official communication from UNT 🙁. Anyways good luck to you phoneix and I hope these guys start working on our applications sooner rather than later...

Congrats to everyone who got in!! I'm graduating from the program in may and I am willing to sell my books for a good price! Send me a PM if you are interested.

I have been looking at a few to apply in case UNT doesn't work out. Since we find out in April, there is plenty of time to consider others that have deadlines of June 1. Georgetown looks like a strong program (expensive though ~40000), and they also have a summer program that looks enticing. Tulane is another program that I think looks strong--the physiology SMP (from what I can read anyways...). I am not sure how an OOS SMP would affect Texas Citizenship for TMDSAS though....
[that's the only thing that concerns me about leaving the state....]
going to another state for educational purposes does not change your residency status. You would have to live and work in a place for a year and register to vote, or have some record that you have been in that place to live for a year for reasons other than taking classes.

Hi shedara,

I am waiting a decision as well.
What are your stats if you don't mind me asking? I believe if you are competitive for the other SMPs that you've listed then you should be fine for the TCOM Med Sci Prog. I went to their recent info session, and they mentioned that they are aiming for a class size of about 185.

I do not believe attending a OOS SMP will affect your residency status in Texas. I am not sure how it all works but I may be wrong. I have a friend who attended Cal for 4 years and still applied in Texas as a resident.

Good Luck to you!

Oh I am sorry, I misred your post due to the error in quotation. Seems like you are answering someone's question.

Disregard

Hi folks, I am considering this program. Some more information about me.

-Texas resident going to a large public university in Texas. Graduating in May.

-Not a URM.

-Good EC's, very little research, some shadowing, international experience.

-No MCAT yet.

-Cumulative GPA- 3.26, BCPM GPA- 3.15.

-AACOMAS Cumulative GPA- 3.65, BCPM GPA- 3.59.

As you can see, my GPA is really holding me back here. I started off decently in my first year, then had a disastrous sophomore year due to me being diagnosed with a condition after going through some tough times health wise. I was foolish not to withdraw from university and really didn't go to class at all during the year. As a result, I paid the price and essentially failed all of my classes.

However, in my Junior and Senior year, I made straight 4.0s- and I'm set to make another 4.0 this semester. So the last two years have been great for me. I've basically retaken all of the classes I did poorly in.

I'm not sure what to do. I have yet to take the MCAT but I will be taking it this summer.

So my question is this-

IF I SCORE REALLY WELL ON THE MCAT- ie- 35+,

-given my health problems and my strong upward trend, do you think I have a shot at allopathic medical schools? If so, should I apply this coming cycle?

-if I don't have a shot at allopathic schools immediately and with a strong MCAT, should I enroll in a program like UNT's medical masters?

IF I SCORE AVERAGE ON THE MCAT,

-should I just go ahead and apply to osteopathic schools?

-or should I go to the Caribbean?

I guess one of my main worries is paying for medical school as well. Going to a DO school out of state would be difficult for me financially. Ideally, I would prefer to go somewhere instate, BUT I do understand where I stand with my stats. I had to accept the mistake I made in light of my medical problems and tried as hard as I could to recover academically.

-Do you think I would be a good fit for this program?

Thanks
