QUESTION: Are there any programs or particular schools that might fund a student's transportation to and from their medical school interviews?

There are very few schools that are able to offer assistance with interview costs, alas. But here are a few exceptions:

1. The University of Michigan provides travel assistance (up to $400) for travel to interviews for financially disadvantaged applicants. They can arrange for housing with a student also [as will many other medical schools].

2. The University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine provides travel reimbursement up to $150 to assist applicants coming to interview who have been identified by AMCAS as disadvantaged. In certain cases, depending on the circumstances, they have paid for the entire visit. Those students are notified prior to the interview that they are eligible for a partial travel reimbursement and are asked to keep all receipts, including air fare, hotel, car rental, etc. They can also arrange for housing through the Medical Student Ambassador Host Program.

3. Northwestern University will allow students to send evaluations from other medical schools where they have interviewed or, if that is not possible, to interview regionally with one or two Northwestern alumni. It is very important that the student communicate with the admissions office so that they can make the necessary determination. Students who could not afford to travel have taken advantage of these opportunities in the past, and have matriculated as a result.

A few other schools have done regional interviews in the past (e.g. George Washington, St. Louis) and this can save on travel expenses but it is ultimately very important to visit any school where you are considering matriculating. So if you do a regional interview and are accepted, it is a good idea to visit that school prior to making a final decision.

The only times I have heard of schools paying for travel expenses for interviews usually involved URMs. I don't know what your financial situation is, but the expense of interviewing will be a drop in the bucket compared to the expense of med school itself, so in the interest of making a smart investment, don't cheat yourself by not interviewing at a school that looks like a good match. I do not recommend regional interviews, b/c it's important to see the school itself (as you note).

There are very cheap airfare deals now--do a search on this, b/c there's a recent thread on cheap plane travel. For starters, try orbitz, travelocity, southwest (if you have it in your city), and airtran. Also, as you mentioned, you can almost always get a spot on a student's couch the night before.

If you qualified for disadvantaged status, it couldn't hurt to ask a school about travel assistance even if they don't advertise it.
