I need to prepare a small (10 min aprox.) presentation on any of the almost 2 million inorganic compounds out there (properties, uses, reactions, combinations, etc.), so I was wondering if anyone could give me some guidance of which one to choose. It would be a plus if it was one with applications on veterinary medicine. I would appreciate very much if you could also name one use or property of the compound so I can have a better starting point.

Thanks in advance. 🙂

My favorite would be calcium carbonate CaCO3. Chalk, limestone, coral skeleton, sea shells, marble, all made of the same chemical with a different crystal structure that makes it have different physical properties.

Coral reefs are huge deposits of calcium carbonate created by small animals (coral polyps). The great barrier reef is the only structure formed by non-human animals that can be seen from outer space. They did it over millions of years, and did not use bull-dozers!

Reactions with acid make carbon dioxide gas.

Antacids would be one medical use. Also used in bone formation from dietary calcium intake.

That would be a good starting place. Take over and research. You should be able to come up with 10 minutes of talk with no problem.

Please verify all "facts" that are given in this post. some of them I may have made up. 🙂 Ha ha.

Homework help is agains the TOS agreement that you signed when you signed up. This may be a bad thread. I think the question is general enough, and I really didn't help you more than give you somewhere to start your own research. Good luck.

Thanks. I only needed some guidance just like you gave me.

Isn't calcium carbonate organic?

Thanks to everyone, but... I believe Calcium carbonate really IS inorganic, because "not all carbon containing compounds are organic. CaCO3, or calcium carbonate is a naturally occurring Mineral compound." It is exluded from organic chemistry.

Another related question... is dicalcium phosphate obtained from CaCO3? I was reading some dog meds (calcium supplement) and it read tricalcium phosphate and dicalcium phosphate. Could they have also used calcium carbonate for the same purpose?
