Is anyone considering doing inpatient for their career?

Anyone doing a SCI or TBI fellowship currently?

Is it true that most SCI and TBI centers are academically affliated and one must work in this setting?

Anyone know salaries??

There is nothing on this topic for rehab physicians currently on this site.

Not everyone is doing pain !

thanks

The best way to find out the job market and salaries is to apply for a job. Even if you are still still over a year from graduating, you can still contact recruiters to find the information you are looking for. If you are 6-12 months away from finishing, that is the proper time to start looking for a job. If you are married, you probably would do well to decide where you want to live first, then find out what jobs are available. If you are single or put your career ahead of family, then you can keep looking to find the job that meets your professional needs. In your job search, if you find that your preferred jobs require a fellowship, then that is the answer you are looking for. Less competitive fellowships may even take you after a year or two of private practice.

Not me.

Mostly. There's only a few dozen places doing real SCI/TBI work in the U.S.

Anyone know salaries??

Probably $150-$200K. Maybe higher if you're a department chairman and probably lower if the job's in a highly desirable metro.

There are fellowships, but they are not common, compared to other fellowships.

Most TBI and SCI centers are academically-affiliated. I'm sure there are a few that are not.

Since most will be academic, salaries will be lower than ave - $120 - 150 starting.

But then you'll have residents doing much of the work. 😀

Does anyone know where the TBI fellowships are? I only know of RIC, Keesler, Baylor, and I hear spaulding has one but it's not on the website.

thanks!

I'm pretty sure MossRehab (Temple) has a newly started TBI fellowship. I remember getting an email about it a few months ago - I'll try to find it.

Edit: Found the email...

"In response to the changes in the field MossRehab will offer a one-year fellowship in neurorehabilitation starting July 2010.

The fellow will participate in the evaluation and management of patients with stroke and TBI through the continuum of care.

Competence in the use of botulinum toxin, phenol injections and ITB will be gained and opportunities to use state of the art technology for 3D motion capture, dynamic EMG, and other specialized equipment for evaluation will be available.

Clinical research and teaching in collaboration with a trans-disciplinary team that fosters a close working relationship with physiatrists and other clinicians specialized in brain injury, and stroke is mandatory.

Letters of application, accompanied by a CV and brief statement of interest should be addressed to:

VCU has a TBI/polytrauma fellowship working with Dave Cifu, Gary Goldberg, Bill Walker, and Shane McNamee. We get all the polytrauma messes coming back from the middle east at the Richmond VA and get all the regions level 1 traffic at VCU.

VCU and the Richmond VA also have an accredited SCI fellowhip working with David Gater at the VA and Bill McKinley at VCU

I heard from a resident that "the only reason to do a SCI/TBI/stroke fellowship is if you plan on being an academic...most physiatrists will graduate from residency being able to take care of the issues that may arise on an inpatient floor..."

obviously not all residents graduate with the same level of competency... just wondering if anyone had any comments? specifically, on the merits of an inpt pm&r fellowship.

thank you

If you plan to do purely TBI or SCI you would be well served to do a fellowship. SCI so you can sit for boards (you can't grandfather anymore), and TBI to get more exposure to OUTPT brain injury management (which is the hard part!)

I am a generalist, and the ONLY patients I refuse to see are brain injuries. They eat up your time and are very needy. They need help though.

Which is why I am glad there are people who do fellowships in it... 🙂
