Shooting for med school fall of '08...I will lose my health insurance when I leave my job for school...any ideas on health coverage as student...want to make sure I am covered for unforseen events...how are others handling this situation???

Some students shop around for individual policies. Many insurance geared to single students with no major chronic illness can be relatively inexpensive, but read the fine print as you sometimes get what you pay for. Coverage for family can be quite expensive. My school makes it mandatory for students to have health insurance, so if you don't show proof of coverage by a certain date, you are forced to take the one they offer. If you are happy with your current plan, you could consider taking COBRA initially, then see what's available.

When I quit my job to do a postbac I was worried about the same thing. The school I go to offers quite reasonable health insurance, and it's been way cheaper than COBRA. It looked really cookie cutter, but it's been fine. An annual is covered, there's prescription coverage, mammograms with a deductible, etc. My school offers up to full year coverage, which includes summer whether I'm enrolled or not.

In looking through the MSARs over the last couple years, it looks pretty standard for med schools to offer similar health insurance. This is a good interview answer/question for "do you have any questions for us?" imho.

Most medical schools have insurance coverage available for medical students. My school's package was included with tuition but coverage for families was NOT included. The package was excellent and I never received any medical bills for anything (after a football injury). This is a good question to ask during interviews.

I will be in the same non-insurance boat as well...me and 50 million other Americans I guess. A little ironic? I think so. I am not so concerned about myself as much as I am for my wife and children. I have been looking at policies and am hard pressed to find anything much less than 500$ a month that offers anything worth having.

Yeah, there's the rub -- coverage is usually pretty cheap for the student through the school plan, but it costs a ton to insure other family members. My insurance charges 4 times as much for a student and spouse as it does for just a student. But yeah, if it's just you you can get an OK plan through the school.

Thanks for the options...
