Complementary & Alternative Medicine, and Reflective Transformation
When: March 28-April 24, 2011

Join us in learning about a wide range of complementary medical
practices from both the intellectual and experiential perspectives and
creating an experience where students inspire, rejuvenate, teach, and
learn from each other, as we transition into a medical practice we
hope to be proud of. If you are in your final year of medical school,
we invite you to apply to HEART. Tuition costs $1000, which includes
all lectures, room and board. Financial assistance should not preclude
students from applying and financial assistance may be possible at the
applicant's request.

AMSA’s Accredited HEART elective
Completely student-driven and student-organized
AMSA developed HEART to continue the process of addressing the lack
of attention given to integrative medicine, activism, student/
physician well-being, and traditional medicine during medical school.
Accredited by the University of Florida College of Medicine, HEART
provides twenty senior medical students with a unique and wonderful
way to complete their medical school career and transition into
residency
Students spend the month in a cooperative living and learning
environment. The 2011 elective is set among the redwoods at the
Quaker Center near Santa Cruz, CA. Students will create an
intentional community, cook and clean, and teach and learn from one
another. They will experience communal living while expanding their
knowledge on a number of important topics not addressed in medical
schools. Didactic and experiential lectures will be scheduled each
day. Physician and experienced professionals in their respective
fields will lead them. In addition, a major aspect of the elective
focuses on the practice of personal-reflection and self-care.
Lectures will focus on the core curriculum of CAM, activism, community
building, and personal reflection. A community service project and
other activities will be planned to provide a well-rounded experience
for participants. By the end of the elective, students should be well
versed in the standard CAM modalities and will have learned new
clinical skills and perspectives.
Heading into its 10th year in 2011, HEART continues to build upon a
model of success that has deeply impacted many students and faculty.
Our current planning committee is working hard to make this unique
experience the best that it can be, with the eventual goal of the
elective being self-sustainable, easily replicated, and usable as a
model for other accredited, student-driven electives.
Previous faculty have included:
• Paul Brenner (author of Buddha in the Waiting Room)
• Rachel Naomi Remen (author of Kitchen Table Wisdom)
• Wayne Jonas (Evidence-based CAM)
• Joel & Michelle Levey (Meditation & Medicine)
• Rohini Kanniganti (Ayurveda)
• Wendy Kohatsu (Nutrition)
Examples of topics to be covered:
• Healing and spirituality
• Traditional Chinese Medicine
• Naturopathy & Osteopathy
• Consensus decision-making
• Global health & Human rights
• Sustainable humanistic medical practice models
• Homeopathy
• …And much more!
