intellectually interested in ob/gyn, but not so much the practice of it

Hi, I'm a third year seeking some advice. I've always been intellectually fascinated by ob/gyn, gyn onc, infertility, reproductive endocrinology, etc. But I'm not so much interested in the actual practice of obstetrics. Deliveries and ob clinic were kind of fun for me but not something I felt passionately about.

So I'm wondering whether it would be such a good idea to do ob/gyn. Problem is, I'm not sure how else to basically do reproductive biology in medicine. Reproductive endo through internal medicine perhaps? Or gyn path?

If there was some other way to do research on say, oocyte preservation, even if I were to not get paid much, I think I'd be pretty eager to do it. But that seems mostly the province of REIs who've done 7 years of training and really busted their rear ends (or kissed a few) to get a fellowship. Same thing for say, ovarian cancer or any number of gyn-related things.

I read previous threads stating that it's a bad idea to go into ob/gyn (or anything else, really) if you wouldn't be happy being a generalist in that field. I just don't think I feel strongly enough about obstetrics to do it for a couple of years (or potentially longer) without a guarantee of a fellowship.

i advice u not to get involved cause once u started u cant go back ,obs is adisaster thing !🙁

Obstetrics is a majot proportion of the residency experience, and therefore going into this field means putting up with at least 4 years of OB.

With respect to fellowship training, REI & GYN/ONC (which both interest you), they are both competetive and nothing is guaranteed. Personally, I think that if you like the fields purely from a "cerebral" perspective, then medical oncology or endocrinology might be a more worth while path for you.

All that said, you are the best judge... The ultimate question is, will you be happy if after 4 years of residency training, fellowship is not attainable.
