what is the most important reason for selecting a speciality - is it MONEY or is it the INTEREST ??

Genuinely interest, but hard work gotta pay something. I mean at the point where you are free of all your debt from loans , etc. you are across half your life. Implying that you spent half your life, to reach a point where you can practice something you really love. If there's no good feedback after all that effort, then, I'd say there would be no backup or motivating factor for people to consider the career of medicine.

Well, I think that depends on the person, but who says they are mutually exclusive. Most people find a compromise between the two. Besides an idiotic and untalented neurosurgeon can still make less than a talented, highly- regarded cardiologist, neurologist, etc. If you pick something you are good at and enjoy you can always find where the money is. In general though, I believe people compromise. If you like IM and ER and money/lifestyle is a factor, then the slight amount of more interest in IM may be worth forgoing to have a better career in another sense.

How about an interest that demands a nonindulgent lifestyle ?? In such a case there'd be no solution but compromise !
