Hi,
I just started my first year of medical school and was interested in becoming an ENT. I know it is a really competitive field and was wondering what it takes to get into a ENT residency. Is research important? Should i start doing that my first year? Also how much do honoring courses matter? How well must I do on my boards? Any feedback would be great. thanks!

Hey there.

ENT is a great field. Hence its competitiveness. Don't let that sway you though. Its not as competitive as integrated plastics/derm. But you need to do well to match.

Focus on your first year classes. Grades, as unimportant as everyone says they are, can help you become elected to AOA. Get involved.

I would suggest refraining from research until you know what medical school is going to entail for you. Shadow some residents, go to grand rounds, see if you can watch some OR time. Get a feel for whether or not you could see yourself doing this for the rest of your career.

Let these contacts you make turn into research opportunities. At the earliest, I would start in the spring of your first year and continue through the summer.

Don't be afraid to explore other fields. Medicine is full of great specialties and
ENT is just one. Everyone finds their niche.

Have fun.
