What is the best approach to go about this

Do well on boards. Take both COMLEX and USMLE. Do well on clinicals, particularly your pediatric rotation. Express interest early in the rotation and work hard to obtain good LOR. Join the pediatric interest group on campus and try to take on a leadership role. Ask about ongoing research at pediatric clinical sites (although not 100% necessary). Volunteer.

OP peds on average isnt competitive. Just do what you need to do and you will match into a peds program

It's definitely not super competitive specialty. But if you want to be a competitive applicant and have your pick of programs, then I would treat it as if it were a competitive specialty.

Most importantly, minimize your student loans

Peds isnt competitive unless your trying to get into an academic center, but even then....
Do well on your studies and boards for now.

10% of DOs trying to match peds don’t match, so it can’t be that easy right?

That is a high number. Maybe some of them have multiple failures or red flags or did not apply to the right and/or enough programs. Peds is as competitive as FM IMO.
