Awesome, thanks for the link. I just had a lecture on Informatics last week and was pretty intrigued. I have a pretty rich digital media background from years ago and find it pretty neat that I might be able to tie in those past skills with new ones.

Thanks for the link, but how does one go about actually finding a job in this field?

You just need to look around. There are 5,000+ hospitals in the US...I will say vast majority of those facilities will require an IT pharmacist or 2 in the future..the push for CPOE and EMR is more pressing than ever.

Does anyone have an idea of the pay scale in this specialty? I know there are many factors, just looking for an idea (i.e. cost/benefit).

I would say in between staff and clinical manager... but this would be a M-F 9-5 job with on call.

Thanks, kinda what I was thinking.

My wife is in nursing informatics and loves it. I have a pretty good idea of what I'd be doing (we just started CPOE in the last 6 months) and I'm sure many places will be instituting CPOE in the near future and there will be quite a demand. Just not sure how much I would actually enjoy the work.

My wife happened to have this job fall in her lap a couple years ago at a large very large hospital. She worked M to F 7:30-4 starting off around $100-110k. She has since been recruited by another very large hospital doing the same thing and will make between $125-135k working M to F 8-5. She was never an IT guru, but enjoyed solving problems including computer based issues. She never completed any formal training. She learned what she knows in the old fashion hands on approach. She loves what she does.

Just a few years ago, there were only a couple handfuls of hospitals in the US that could justify having a small group of employees in the pharmacy dept dedicated to IT issues. Your best bet, if you are interested in this, is to contact large hospitals who have the size, number of patient beds, clinics, etc that could actually justify having a Phrmacist dedicated to IT.
