I posted something similar in my last peds forum, but the topic is unrelated so I thought a new post was warranted-
What are some of the most interesting procedures you get to do as an ophthalmologist? I've been heading to ophtho my whole life and am just finishing my surgery rotation and have loved neurosurgery and orthopaedics. Their cases are amazingly interesting. Do you find the same of ophtho? Or does one need to have a large interest in the medicine side of practice to stay happy? I am very sorry to load the message board, but decision time is nigh for me! Thank you!

No matter what specialty you choose, the cases will eventually become "routine" to you. This is probably a good thing because it indicates that you have probably mastered the procedure.

I think most medical students fall in the trap of picking a surgical sub-specialty solely on the associated "cool" factor. While it may sound "cool" to be a brain or bone surgeon, you should also consider the lifestyle that accompanies that choice.

Do you want to be called in at 3 am to do an emergency craniotomy and then be expected to round on your patients at 7 am and then again at 6 pm after office hours? Trust me, those things will get old fast.

The great thing about Ophthalmology is that you can have a great mix of office visits and surgery...all the while avoiding the dreaded hospital...and also making your patients very very happy. Plus, you can still have free time to be involved in other business ventures (e.g. hence OphthoQuestions) and see your kids as they grow up.
