Hello.
I plan to use interfolio.com for sending my letters of recommendation from doctors. Do all MD and DO schools recognize interfolio.com as being valid? That is, willl they all accept letters sent via interfolio.com? Please list any that don't. thanks.

I used Interfolio for every school I applied to. It wasn't a problem.

It's a fairly well recognized letter management system. There's a cover letter included with each package that you mail that explains the Interfolio system, in case the receiving institution is unfamiliar... but I would say it's highly likely most of the schools you apply to (if not all) will recognize it.

I also did not have any problem using Interfolio for the schools I applied to. I would also suggest telling your letter writers to use the electronic signature or fax/snail mail the letter with the signature to interfolio as some schools require a letter with a signature from the letter writer.

Applied to 37 schools without a problem.

For the schools that don't say anything about interfolio, do we just get interfolio to mail the letters and hope they don't reject them?

For instance, I'm applying to SUNY Buffalo, and they don't say anything about Interfolio... can I still mail them there by using interfolio?

I'm also applying at Thomas Jefferson and they say they accept VirtualEval or Fax. Does this mean I can't use interfolio at all since they don't say anything about accepting mailed LOR's?

When schools say they "accept" Interfolio vs. Virtual Eval, they're talking about the emailed service. Some schools are set up for one or the other.

I haven't heard of any school not accepting the mailed copy. When you go to send Interfolio, you'll see if a school accepts the emailed version. If it's not on the list, just snail mail it.

I applied there last year and they took the letters just fine, sent via regular mail. I would say about 50% of the schools I applied to accepted electronic versions and 50% had to be printed off by interfolio and mailed (which costs a little more, but hey, when was anything cheap in the application process?).

They have entries for CVs, abstracts, test scores, portfolios, transcripts, writing samples...

yea but what do you do with those things? it's not like you mail any of those to medical schools. So it's just a place to save stuff, evne though you could save those documents on your PC, etc? I heard you can't mail transcripts from interfolio. Is that true or not?

I wrote interfolio.com to find out specifically which of the 70 schools they refer to on their web page accept "electronic" mailings from the company. Here is the list they sent me. It is current as of January 2007.

"Below are lists of Allopathic medical schools that receive credentials
from Interfolio electronically. We deliver credentials to all 125
allopathic schools
but only these 70 presently receive electronic deliveries from
Interfolio (the rest receive on paper).
For Osteopathic schools,
Interfolio currently delivers all credentials on paper but we plan to
deliver them electronically in the future.

The reason interfolio is nice is for mailing LOR's. LOR's should be confidential so they are not mailed directly by you, but should be sent by the professor or a letter service like interfolio, your school's letter service if they have one, etc. The other services I did not use, nor did I see any use for them in the medical school application process. Keep in mind though that other people use interfolio besides people applying to medical school and having a CV, transcripts, etc might be useful for them.

If you do not use a letter service like interfolio then you have to say "Professor X, could you please mail that letter you wrote for me to these 30 schools?" Then repeat that conversation with several more professors. And if you decide to add another 3 schools later on? Then it's back to the professors to ask them to mail out the letters again to those schools. This quickly becomes a hassel for them. In fact they might change the letter they write to simply have some complaints about how the student refuses to use a letter service and this is the 30th letter they have had to stuff in an envelope.

UCSF will NOT accept interfolio if your school has a letter service. i heard that UCSD is the same.

Interfolio is popular among premeds because it makes LOR transmission easier. However, premeds (and med students) are not the only people that use interfolio. Other people applying to different graduate schools also use it, and their grad schools may require an abstract along with LORs, or a teaching student may need to send a teaching portfolio in addition to several other documents to apply for a certain position.
