Hi guys, I'm really confused with how to tell intermittent variable decelerations from recurrent variable decelarations.

Decelerations are defined as RECURRENT if they occur with >50% of uterine contractions in any 20 min window. RECURRENT variable decelerations are managed with maternal lateral positioning, IV fluids, and oxygen.

Vs.

Decelarations are defined as INTERMITTENT if decelerations occure with <50% of uterine contractions in any 20 min window. INTERMITTENT variable declerations do NOT require any intervention because they are assoc with normal perinatal outcomes.

How do you tell the difference between INTERMITTENT and RECURRENT? Is there a specific finding on the tracing that helps you distinguish between them?

I came across a question asking for the management of variable decelerations that listed both of the managements listed above in the answer choices and I was confused because I couldn't' tell the difference between the two types of decelerations. Thus, got the management wrong.

You answered the question yourself & even bolded the answers. What are you asking?

I mean how do you tell the difference between intermittent and recurrent on the graph? What is the finding on the graph that distinguishes them? How does the graph show that it occurs with less than 50% of uterine contractions vs more than 50% of contractions?

Look at the graph and count.
