hi all ---

now that the ophtho application is sent off, i've been wondering...how many different intern year programs have people typically applied to in the past?

obviously it's hard to know where you will end up for ophtho, and you need to apply to more than one intern year program in each of the cities where you are applying for ophtho. Since a lot of the intern programs start interviewing in Nov/December, and the ophtho match is not til January, that could add up to a lot of interviews in cities where you won't end up...

any guidance/advice from previous years' applicants would be much appreciated!

thanks!

I would highly recommend doing a transitional year for your intern year, unless you truly love internal medicine and enjoy being on call. Transitional programs allow for more elective rotations, which usually are call-free months. Transitional programs vary in the number of electives...some only have one or two elective months, which is pretty much the same as most prelim medicine programs. The program that I went to had 5 elective months, so that was pretty nice. I applied to 8 different programs in a few major cities that I wanted to live in...you may want to apply to a few more since I hear that these programs are getting more competitive. I would also probably apply to one or two prelim medicine programs just as a back up. Good luck!

5 elective months! Whoa.

I am interested in doing a transitional year (not a big fan of IM), and would be very interested in knowing where this program is (or others like it)!

Please post if you feel comfortable sharing.

Not a big fan of IM?...what a surprise! I did my transitional year at Illinois Masonic Med Ctr in Chicago. There are a few other "nice" transitional programs in Chicago, such as Louis Weiss and St. Francis. For the most part, I think all the transitional programs in Chicago are pretty good. I really think that a few months of IM is more than enough, though it is a good character-builder (whatever!).
