any residents out there who could give some advice about scheduling rotations for the intern year? any general suggestions would be appreciated!

I'm not sure you know what you're asking.
Your intern year schedule is made for you by your chief residents. You may get a little input in terms of preference for certain rotations at particular times of the year, but not always. The most input you have is what electives you choose.

The Chiefs in my program sent out schedule requests prior to starting in the program. We had the ability to request certain electives and preferred weeks of vacation. The Chiefs did their best to try to accommodate specific requests for things like marriages, maternity leaves, etc. However, specific requests are not always guaranteed. Try to choose electives that you think you are interested in. I agree with the above poster in that this is the area in which you will have the most input for next year. Good luck!

Any advice on vacation timing? Honestly, I'm not religious so I don't mind working over the holidays. But, I expect that I'll be hitting the wall sometime between Nov and Feb. Not saying that I have seasonal affective or anything, but that seems to be my yearly low period. And, most of the residents I spoke will said that about 6 months in is when the "high" of being a resident wears off. Late fall and early summer are the down times for my S.O., but I doubt we'll be planning any elaborate vacations this year.

I agree about the vacation thing - fortunately michigan guarantees you 5 days off around the holidays, so right about the time you really need a break - you get one! I also requested for vacation in february b/c I'm pretty sure by then I'll need one.

I'm moving to a different state for my advance program, so I requested for a terminal leave. I hope I don't feel that midpoint exhaustion syndrome!

I am in that situation now. I am finishing a prelim yr in IM and moving out of state for my advanced program in anesthesiology....

Pretty much they took my schedule requests and laughed at them. I admit, it's nice to have 4 weeks vacation, but my program makes us take them 2 weeks at a time AND they scheduled my 1st 2 weeks WAY back in early September when I did NOT need a vacation...and then my last 2 weeks are the last 2 weeks of June so I can relocate(which is no vacation by the way). This means I have gone many...many...many...long months of wards and units without any break. It has been arduous to say the least but there is finally a light at the end of the tunnel!! (I'm burned out on IM if you can't tell)

Hopefully your program will schedule your vacation later into the year than mine did! (This is something to think about if you haven't already!)

Good Luck!
