International "Alien" students and Medical School.

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The F-1 is the main full time study visa. Unless you are an international just taking some electives at a med school where you would have a J - exchange student visa

I'm sharing some more info on loans for international students, as I received a PM about this, want to share this info with everyone else too.

(listed by my school as Loans for International STudents)
http://www.iefc.com/
The International Education Finance Corporation (IEFC) is the premier provider of international student loan programs for the rapidly growing population of students who wish to study in foreign countries.

Loans for International Students

Citibank, other US banks etc. provides loans with cosigners

Access Group (www.accessgroup.org) - listed by my school, therefore I assume they're legitimate and established. I qualified for a loan without a co-signer. But you need 3+ years US credit history.

Any other international students here preparing to begin the 2007 application cycle?

however UT system REQUIRES 90 hours of under courses taken in the states, did you actually do that? that's like over 20 courses!

That's the TX factor for you. I'm only applying to TX schools which have been incredibly kind to me (esp. Baylor and UT Southwestern) Hopefully I'll get an acceptance somewhere. BTW, most TX schools only look at state residency rather than PR or US citizenship. And, according to TX law, I am considered a TX resident. Dartmouth is great. Good luck - I'm sure you'll do great!

Hey I was wondering....I'm currently on an H1B visa and I have to switch back to an F1 for school. I'm not going home this summer to get my F1 visa in my passport and I was wondering if I need to have the F1 just to travel or also to go to school?

I'm applying this cycle, but I didn't graduate from a US college so it might be difficult. Funny thing is I'm applying as a fallback, since my local school (first choice for money reasons) is only accepting 25 students this year. 🙄

Hey you guys, I'll call survivors!
I am in the same boat, so I know what are you going through. just like all of you I thought I am the only no PR, no citizneship one 🙂.
Anyways, just wanted to share of what I am doing, although it's different situation. I am going through the RN pathway. as u know, due to the lack of the nurses in US, they are giving green cards to the licensed nurses. so, if you have diploma from your country , just prepare fro NCLEX, get your license, green card, and then apply to your top med schools . if no license or diploma from non US country, then you gotta spend extra two years to get your license
I have such a desire, goal and power now to apply to med school and it hurts me to become a nurse first, but I guess , I simply gotta do that. so international students that considering medicine, go through the nursing pathway getting your green card by the way.
Good luck all of you international applicants , I know it's the hardest for you guys and I am so impressed you guys not loosing hope and going for it. 👍

Hey malika,

Thats what i am kinda doing too. I am going to get my BS in biology and then do an accelerated nursing course for 1.5 years and then take the nursing exam and become a RN. As you said, they are giving away green cards to nurses now beacause of the shortage. I also wish that i didnt have to take this route but after thinking about all other paths its the most suitable option. Plus i am on a H-4 visa too, and there are some other variables than screw me over more.

Does anyone know how med schools look upon those who become nurses and then plan on going to med schoool??

check out non-traditional applicants forum. there are several discussions regarding nurses going to med schools. basicaly, as long as you have Bachelor's degree, they don't care. The question is, why did we become nurses first and then applying to med shcool. sometimes I think of telling the truth in the interview that I did need PR and went through this path, like to show that I am ready to do anything jst to reach my goal. u think that would be bad answer?

Thats the same question i am asking myself now, im not sure to tell the truth or not. It does kinda look bad if we say we became nurses so we could get PR, but seriously, sometimes there isnt much of a choice. Im not sure what we should say. Im trying to find out what others have done.

hey im applying this cycle also but im bs/md at Howard University in DC, so i'm supposed to go there for med school

hi there

quick question on the AMCAS application - how do I convert scores from a school in India into US grades? AMCAS wasn't too helpful on this and I would rather not leave my grades blank.

thanks

Hey Thanks a lot! Mount sinai and Davis require 4 years upfront? on the fiu site it says one year financial statement, how do you know they require 4 years upfront? Thanks again and congrats on Northwestern

Got interview at UC-Davis and they wanted the 4-year money upfront.Almost all of the NY schools want it upfront,I called them to verify.
This is what the site said!!

MOUNT SINAI SCHOOL OF MEDICINE OF NEW YORK UNIVERSITY

Applicants who are not citizens (including Canadian students) must meet INS requirements for F-1 or other student visa. International applicants are treated the same as other applicants. Approximately seven non-citizens have matriculated over the last four years. No international students are counted as minorities. 😀 They must prepay tuition or establish an escrow account for four years of tuition. 😀 No financial aid is available for noncitizens.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, DAVIS SCHOOL OF MEDICINE

Noncitizens without permanent residency status 😀 must provide proof of the availability of sufficient funds for completion of the program. 😀 Applicants from Canada are considered as international applicants.

Also note that schools like Meharry and NYU no longer accept internationals.Thats straight from the Dean's office. It pays to call.

well thanks again, the list of schools i can apply to is diminishing daily 🙁

What r u guys choosing as safety schools? Most of the schools that accept internationals are private and very competitive. So what's ur back up?

I don't think 'safeties' really exist, much less for us internationals. My strategy is to apply to as many as i can!

apply to phd as a backup. i'd choose to go to a phd than go to some unknown med school. if you dont get into any meds, go do a year or masters and reapply. you 'd be a much stronger applicant. phd's with your stat is easy to get in. with stipent, it no waste of money either!

I'm an international student at college and I was just wondering if there were any schools that offered full scholarships for international students? I'm nowhere near getting into med-school because I'm a freshman, but I want to transfer to a "top-notch" university - one that has better rankings, but their tution is just way beyond what I can afford right now. So, does anyone know some good universities that offer scholarships to international students and ones that are affordable?

No visa? Not a legal resident? Please call XXX-XXX-XXXX and give them your name and address for full paid scholarship info.

What if you have a visa? Can you still call?

Moderator note: the phone number above was for the Illegal Alien Hotline--there is no "full paid scholarship" it was meant to be a joke.

I don't know any full scholarships, but there can be some options for your background. I tried Ukrainian scholarships, which are not going to make me rich, but it is still better than nothing...

Another thing you might consider is a permanent resident status. There are many scholarships that you can be eligible for as a permanent resident. There is still some time left for you, so you can try playing a green card lottery if you are from qualified country. I know many people who won their status in this way.

I know this is slightly off-topic, but I hope someone from this thread could help me out, since you've possibly been through this.

I'm an alien who has received my first bachelor's abroad and am now working on my second bachelor's in the US. The classes / credits from abroad have transferred to my US school.

I'm in the process of completing my AMCAS app. When entering course work for the foreign university (where credit and A,B,C grades were transferred to US), what do you enter for the course name and number? The name and number from the foreign school or US school? Transfer instructions say to enter 'as it appears on the original transcript'. But, AMCAS never sees the foreign transcript; they only have the US one. The instructions for this section just says "Enter all required course data"...whatever that means.

Since some of you have gotten past this stage (and received secondaries or are in med school), I thought to ask here. I would appreciate any help.

Thanks!

I put the names of courses from a foreign school, no course numbers, as many hours(credits) as a local school gave, and no grades, because grades were not transfered to USA system. In my case it would not matter what i put anyway. After I was accepted, the med. school asked me to get the official transcript from the foreign school. Only after they got it, they considered these courses as a part of requierements.

I think our situations are a little different, but I appreciate your reply. Congrats on getting into med school and good luck!

Teee, how's the application process going so far? It seems like we have alot of the same schools applying to, though i'm not getting any action yet because i'm waiting for MCAT results.

Hey! I am glad you are still around. I just have pre-secondary rejections, my file became complete at a number of places last week/this week, so hopefully :begging: i will hear good news/any news soon. Good luck with the MCAT. Hopefully we will only have to go through this once.

Yeah, I'm still here...i'm still waiting on secondaries from 2 schools and I just got the EVMS one, so that'll keep me busy until MCAT scores are out.

:luck: To both of us!:luck:

Hello fellow aliens!

Add me to the 2007 international applicants list! I just completed the primary applications last week (I'm an August MCATer), and am waiting for the verifications at the moment. Good luck to you all!

bump, there are like lots of canadians asking questions...

Funny. I just started a similar thread this morning with no replies!
Glad there are so many of us out there though!

I got two interviews and one acceptance so far...both "safety" schools. Haven't heard from the more competitive ones yet though....Crossing my fingers for Wash U.

Teee, how is the process coming along for you?

Hey km, i can't complain. the process is killing me softly, but if and when i have that acceptance, i guess it will be worth it. and you? how was your mcat?

congrats, at least you have an acceptance :luck:

how can we find out if a school offers scholarships (whether full-tuition or not) to international students?
if I get accepted to a school in the states, I would most likely have to max out on loans I can take, and any financial help would be a huge help for me.

Hi,
One more potential F1 here. Good luck to everyone with the process.
