Hi everybody... I am new to this forum. I just had my application verified by AMCAS.

Stats :

Freshman sGPA 3.85 cGPA 3.69 total credit hrs/year29.00

Sophomore sGPA 2.19 cGPA 2.17 30.00

Junior sGPA 3.67 cGPA 3.55 32.00

Senior sGPA 3.77 cGPA 3.79 60.00

Total sGPA 3.26 cGPA 3.39 151.00

Last 60 credits finished from a well reputated university in philadephia and graduated from that institute with cytotechnology major. Rest of the credits are from community college

MCAT June 21st 2014 : V-7, BS-9, PS-11 Total : 27 (main reason : ran out of time... Had to guess 3 passages in verbal, 2 in PS and 2 in BS. Studied for one month.

I am taking MCAT again in September 6th, 2014 and I am confident that I will get atleast 32-33 this time.

EC :

Job : I am an ASCP certified Cytotechnologist working full time at some good academic hospital since february, 2014.

Research participitation in National Cancer Institute funded cancer research program at the same hospital.

Shadowed a cardio-thorasic surgeon for 100 hours.

235 some volunteer hours.

LOR : 1 from Shadowing surgeon, 1 from pathologist whom I work with at the hospital, 1 from the faculty (She is MD/PhD )

I decided to go to Medical school very late somewhere in january, 2014. I know I am late for this cycle but I would like to know how late I am. How badly it can hurt me.

One More thing, I am an international applicant. I have my BS degree from US university.

What are my chances ? I am tensed that I don't have a good shot for this cycle.

Thank you in advance

I may disappoint you, but you have really limit chance to get in MD since neither your GPA nor mcat, even within 32-33 range are stellar. This holds true for international student since basically none of instate medical school will accept international student, and some of medical schools even state that you must be citizen or legal alien before you apply. The only hope is from private medical school. but your package is not golden. I know one international student went to Duke with 3.85 gpa with 36 mcat, and his EC and LORs are golden. This is just my opinion that DO seems better for you.

Thank you for your reply... I am aware of the fact only few schools accept international students. I think there are 74 schools who accepts application from international students. I am applying to them only.

what kind of MCAT score will put me in a good situation ?

I think the average (or median?) mcat for US MD matriculants now is a 31.
Many US applicants don't get into MD schools with a 27…
as an international student your standards are much higher.

From my perspective, I think gpa for international student must be average +0.2 and average mcat+2 for each school. For example, Average for Duke is 3.75 with 34, so your gpa has to be 3.9 with mcat 36 to 37.

You decided to go to med school late, take a year or two and then apply.
You work?! Can't they sponsorize your green card?!
You have time, don't rush too much, take some time, work, continue volunteering, redo your classes that you didn't do well in (if they are part or the prerequisites) and consider schools that are not too high like harvard. See the forum, there are tons of international here like myself and some got accepted, check where and apply there 😛
Opt for a DO, it's like MD, it will take you to the same place.

Apply next year, September is too late with lower stats.

Thank you very much for your valuable feedback. I really appreciate it. I agree with you. I am having the same feeling that I am pretty late for this cycle with this kind of stats. I am making up my mind to apply next year.

I am aware that My GPA is lower than the 10th percentile for most schools. I have a question. Do medical schools look at only cumulative GPA for all four years or they look at individual year? My GPA is low because of the sophomore year. I basically failed one semester. I took three science classes that semester and got two 2 Ds and one F. (u know.. A girl problem...Damn). I retook them in next semester and got all A s One more thing, I took total 60 credits in my senior year and my GPA was 3.77 for that year. All I am trying say is my GPA is pretty much in range except my sophomore year. Do Medical schools look at this the way I explained here or they just look at the overall GPA of the candidates and they move on ?.

I was admitted in medical school in my home country in 2008. I didn't finish it. (The reason is that I didn't want to commit too many years in medicine at that time. However, over the time, I realized that medicine is what I want to do in my life for sure) I did one year and moved to the United States in 2009. Is this a good point to include in my application ?

What kind of activities/improvements/changes do you guys suggest on my application if I apply next year that will pretty much gurantee my admission ? It's very difficult to improve my GPA at this point, but what kind of MCAT score would balance my GPA ?

One more thing I wanted to ask is weather AMCAS saves your verified application. Do I have to have my application verified again if I decide to apply next year?

Thanks for your reply. Are you a medical student ? Just curious.

?
You must include this in your application for two reasons: the AMCAS primary specifically asks about previous matriculation and transcripts will be requested and time must be accounted for.
