I'm pursuing an Integrated Bachelor's plus Master's in Clinical Psychology from Amity University, New Delhi, India. I have been browsing the website of the Psychology department at various universities and I'm extremely interested in applying for the PsyD program. I feel the program being offered is a perfect match for my background and future aspirations.

Even though I'm aware that the GRE general score is required for admission at most universities, I was not able to perform well on the exam. The main reason for this is that in India there is no special learning centers for students who are weak in Math at an early age. I realized later on that I might have had a slight form of dyscalculia in my childhood, but because my teachers were not able to identify it I was forced to leave Math as a subject at a very early age and choose other subjects instead. I never took a Math class after middle school and because English is not my native language, I performed poorly on the GRE (combined score of less than 1000).

Ever since I was a child, I have aspired to become a successful clinical psychologist and work with and assist children who have disabilities. My younger brother had severe dyslexia and attention deficit hyperactive disorder while growing up, and seeing the pains and troubles he went through made me choose Psychology as my chosen field. I saw first-hand how much my brother's psychologist helped him and that was a big motivation for me.

All my other credentials are up to the mark, I have been interning with a very well reputed Clinical Psychologist in India for the past four years. My GPA in college has been good and have a very good relationship with all my professors. I am writing my thesis on Analysis of Behavior and Anxiety in Parents of Kids Suffering From ADD/ADHD and it is coming along very well.

I genuinely believe I can present a strong case for myself in the application, but for my very low GRE score. I will really appreciate if I can get some more information on how the GRE is used for evaluation of an applicant (is there a minimum cut-off, minimum GRE scores taken in the past years etc) and get some insight on this matter.

Can someone suggest some approaches for me to take while working on my application? Is it safe to mention that I suffered from a disability in my childhood?

Also, I will really appreciate if someone can suggest universities that do not require GRE for PsyD (I have read the other threads, so please post if you have a new suggestion) or those that take students despite a low score.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Exactly how long are we talking? And have you taken the TOEFL?

I haven't studied Math in the past 9 years (excluding Stats courses in college, but no geometry/algebra).

I have registered for the TOEFL and its in a few days - I'm confident I'll get more than the minimum cut-off.

Thanks for your help!!

I'm sorry, I mistyped - it should have said "How low are we talking?" I.e., you said below 1000, but exactly how low are they? 990 is a lot different than 750...

Not to sound mean, but you are going to have to fix that. It's gonna take good old fashioned hard work and maybe testing under an exception for your condition where you get extra testing time.

You might be able to secure admission to programs that do not require GRE scores but they tend to be expensive and they often times have below average reputations academically. That said, they are an option.

Seconding what Mark said - with scores that low pretty much your only option is schools that don't require the GRE's.

^^Thanks for the input - and yeah I realize I don't have much options. I attempted the GRE twice and both time got around the same score, I just can't get my head around Math after not studying it for all this while.

As of now, I plan to apply to Adler, MSPP, Wright, CalSPP and JFKU. Would you guys know of any other schools? I want to pursue a Clinical PsyD..

Thanks and good luck for your endeavors!
