Does anyone know any legitimate international fellowship programs to serve in third world countries for premeds who are taking a year off before medical school?

I have been trying to find some programs but can't find anything medical related. They are all building houses and etc but nothing medical or health care related. I realize as a non-med student, I won't be able to get any medical work, but nevertheless I was hoping to do something basic that's health-related. If anyone has a link or any info, I would be greatly grateful.

Thanks!!

You can look into the Fulbright Scholarship - it is a funded year for research of your choosing (international), though it is quite competetive. One of my friends got one for a health-related project in Zimbabwe. If you can spare two years you might want to check out the Peace Corps.

There aren't many international opportunities (as you discovered...) but have you already applied/gone through the application process and you want to defer?

I am volunteering in the US because I needed to be around to fly to interviews and such. I only wanted to take one year off (which I am very very glad I did) but if you go internationally you are going to have to take more than a year or defer an acceptance (which many schools offer!)

There are plenty of inner-city volunteer programs in the US with healthish related opportunities...

Here are some programs that I looked into last summer…ones that let undergraduates help out. You still have to pay your way but I heard that it can be a great experience.

1) Child Family Health International
http://www.cfhi.org/
Students in pre-med, clinical med, masters of public health, nursing, dentistry, psychology, naturopathy, osteopathy, physicians assistant, senior undergraduates. Medical residency. Clinical rotations, 4 week electives. Ecuador, Bolivia, South Africa, India, Mexico. Some Spanish needed in some locations.

2) Projects Abroad
http://www.projects-abroad.org/projects/medicine.php
Experience the stark contrast between medical practice in the West and developing countries, and gain unparalleled experience of a number of conditions which have been left untreated and have developed into advanced pathological conditions. For medical, elective, pre-university and pre-med students, etc. China, Ghana, India, Mexico, Mongolia, Nepal and Russia. (at least 4 weeks)

3) Unite for Sight

There are others here (http://www.missionfinder.org/medstudents.htm) but you’ll have to sort through them and see which ones are only for med students. Good luck!
