Hi everyone! I am currently a freshman pursuing a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering. I really would like to go to medical school for my M.D., but I am hearing from a lot of people admission is very difficult for international students. My permanent residency has been pending since 2011 so I am still considered an international student going to school in the state of New Jersey. How much of a bearing does my status as an international student have on my admissions decision?

First off, you will have to draw up a list of schools that consider international students (not all do). But more importantly, see which schools actually MATRICULATE international students.

After that, the best advice would be to apply to places where you are at least in the upper 50th percentile in terms of the school's accepted/matriculant stats. The higher the better. There are just so few seats for international students that it will take a lot to overcome that seat disparity. It's hard to provide any more accurate advice until at least a couple of years from now when you have a GPA record and MCAT score. Study hard and try to get involved in research and volunteering. Numbers alone will not be able to take you to where you want to go.

Do you live with family/is your family with you here? You need to work with an immigration lawyer to speed up your pending residency status.
It took me a while to become a permanent resident and recently a US citizen (originally from Canada).

Yes, my family is here with me. I am an Indian male and there is a huge backlog in greencards being issued. There is not too much we can do.

The international student matriculant rate is 9.4% last year🙂)
