HI everyone, I am a new member. I am doing a massive research project to determine two things, (1) how physicians are compensated in each country (employed and paid by state, self employed, etc.), and (2) how much physicians make, by specialty.

In the US, doctors can be self-employed or employed by hospitals, and compensation by specialty varies greatly. A great wealth of survey data broken down by specialty exists for the US.

In other countries, I understand that doctor pay may be much more rigid, especially if paid by the government.

So what I am looking for is as much detail as possible.

Using this forum, I found great data for France (<-- click link).

However, I am having difficulty turning anything up for other countries.

If any one could provide me similar data to what I found for France, for any country, that would be great!

My top locations are:

1.UK
2. Germany
3. Italy
4. Belgium
5. Saudi Arabia
6. China
7. Honk Kong
8. Taiwan
9. S. Korea

However, any additional information would be incredibly helpful.

Thank you so much!

I wouldn't cite anyone on this forum as a source. Use facts or data from official websites, don't ask us.

With that being said, at least we can give you a rough guide. In the UK, the salaries are all posted. Consultants make around 100k pounds a year with bonuses for good clinical work/research running from 5k pounds to 32k pounds for gold level work. This applies to doctors working in the NHS.

Doctors can go private, and there is no salary cap, but doctors that do go private tend to be "good" and they usually make more than NHS doctors.

In China, doctors that are fully trained make around 10,000 yuan a month official salary meaning 120k yuan a year which can translate to a pittance in US dollars around 15k. However, Doctors at big (i.e. top) hospitals will take "red envelopes" aka bribes, from patients who want "the best treatment". This makes the real salary of good doctors much higher than official numbers. Doctors can also earn money by promoting drugs from pharmaceutical companies and this will supplement their income. There is a current problem whereby ill people travel to the biggest cities for "the best care" even for minor illnesses. Big city trauma centers are jam packed with people while more rural or regional centres remain empty. This is because people believe that the best doctors work in the big cities: Beijing, Shanghai, and to a large extent this is true.

Thank you, this is very helpful. I didn't intend to cite anyone on here, but I was hoping that I could be pointed to the websites I am looking for. I did find a lot of places that I thought would have the data, but since the sites are in foreign languages, they were difficult to navigate, even with my browser translation plugin. If I could get a direct source to compensation data, I could easily translate that, it's just that I can't find a direct source.

I do appreciate the time you spent in your response. That does give me some info for how I can hone my search.

Again, thank you.
