hi everyone! I'm a first year student at Tufts. I am starting to pursue their international vet med program, which includes completing a summer research project abroad. after speaking with the director, she thinks I have great chances of getting the (COVID) approval since I have family and a citizenship to the country I want to research in (Egypt for specifics). I want to look at cultural attitudes towards companion animals and how that might affect the quality/quantity of vet care.

my main questions are:
-does anyone have tips for learning a foreign language while in vet school? I have a foundation of Arabic, but not enough to interact and have conversations with people. I have Duolingo, but I wasn't sure if there was a resource with medical terms in foreign languages.
-I'm having this internal battle with myself thinking I'm not ready to take this on yet - does anyone have any tips/recommendations to really figure that out before I start applying for grants, etc.?
-lastly, does anyone have tips for making connections (ex. veterinarians, faculty at their professional school) in a foreign country? I'm sure my family can help me get in contact with people, but I can't expect them to do the digging for me.

also please let me know if this post should be somewhere else/already answered! thanks in advanced!

Coincidentally, one of my mentors just did a little consulting in Egypt. (He escorted a shipment of Holsteins from the US to Egypt on a cargo ship and stuck around for a week or so after to consult for the dairy that purchased them).

It's not the industry / potential research project you're looking for but I could maybe do a virtual introduction if you want.

One of the anatomists at VMCVM is also an Egyptian who previously taught at the vet school in Cairo. He might be worth reaching out to for networking.
