International rotations during residency

I was wondering how the PM&R residency programs at your schools handle international rotations, if they allow them at all? Do you receive credit? Is your malpractice covered?

What international electives in PM&R are available during residency?

Mayo has a Mayo International Health Program.

Residents across departments apply on a competitive basis. PM&R residents have done well in the past. Pretty much, if you can dream up a rotation with PM&R objectives or other, you can do it if you can come up with a convincing reason. Residents in the past of gone to Africa, Columbia, Thailand, and Dominican Republic (while I have been here) and have done a variety of rotations. I'm not sure about the credit you recieve as I haven't done it.

I believe it's fairly easy to do an international elective at Spaulding. I also know it's possible at RIC but can be difficult to organize in terms of malpractice, etc. Jefferson also has had residents go abroad. I am not sure what paperwork is involved.

Malpractice when international? What are they going to do extradite you? Come to America to sue you for something you did in another country? As a resident?

This issue came back a couple years ago - one of the RPC members approached the ABPMR to ask them about their policy and we were told that the policy has been amended.

"The ABPMR met in July [of 2006] and decided to amend its policy on international/non-ACGME training time as counting toward leave time to coincide with ACGME regulations that allow one month on non-ACGME training as elective time."

yup - seemed like a half-baked response to me, quite frankly. This way, you burn ALL your vacation days to do an elective (notice the statement makes reference to "leave time", allowing your residency to NOT count the time, even if the Board now will.)

Look into Healing Hands for Haiti. Some of the Spaulding residents have done this.

U of Mich PMR dept works with a hospital in Ghana and another of the attendings does pediatric rehab in Mali. I think at least 1 or 2 residents a year go to either place.
