Hey all,
I am an international student who has got into a 4 year dental program in the US. I applied for 60,000$ for the first year and got approved with the access group w/o cosigner. However I am worried that I may not be approved for the remaining years (they say I have to apply for each year at the beginning of that year and my obtaining the loan will depend on my credit score at the time of application)...I am worried about embarking on this road w/o being sure about money to complete my education....any advice?
anyone who has got access loan in the past plse contact me

Well since they approved you now, I don't see why they wont later on, as long as you don't damage your credit score by opening other accounts, like credit cards for example and using them unresponsibly. We all by the way need to apply for loans on an annual basis (federal and/or private loans) so having to apply every year is the norm, don't worry too much about, just be responsible when it comes to money management, which can be tough, but it's doable, best of luck

yes!i do agree with kilani...u can get the loan approved on a yearly basis.so dont break your head too much on something whatz gonna happen next year....

well i dont know
i think the interest rate is 8% or something like that...is it the same for ppl who take out federal loans?
I have to pay 3000$/mo. approx to pay back the loan in 20 years? isnt that crazy?
what do u guys say..plse respond asap

The rate for Stafford loans is 6.8% and for GradPlus loans (new federal loan) is 8.5% , the rate you got is very good for a private loan for an international student, don't hesitate.

Thanks for the input. I feel really apprehensive though. Parents hate the word 'loan'. I have to admit that I feel a bit scared to defy them and go ahead with this one. What if I don't have money for the remaining three years...aaaahhh
Don't know what to do.
To you international students out there, are there many companies that sponsor visas for foreign dentists trained in the US? After everything is said and done, I hope I will get a job to pay back my loans!

With all due respect to your parents, and to all parents in the world, it's your future, and ultimately your decision, your parents wont support you all your life..... right ?

That I don't know the answer for, but I have known some international dentists who were sponsored by "companies". Again, wishing you and everybody in your situation and myself the best of luck 😀

Just did some thorough research on this loan.
Well the interest rate is variable. It is based on 3 month LIBOR + 3.95%. LIBOR is London interbank offered rate. Please see this link about LIBOR:
http://www.accessgroup.org/students/LIBORforstudents.htm

I have spoken to my uncle about this loan and he says that it is very risky to get into debt without knowing what interest rate will be charged.

Also for federal loans one does not pay interest when one is in school. The interest is subsidized by the government. with private loans you are charged interest from day one.

There is one question that has been nagging me. With private loans, do you get a tax write-off. Is that complete or partial?

Kilani,
please would you check your PMs?

No one's got any answers?
Also are there any companies that sponsor green cards for international students who studied dentistry in the US? I have not been able to find any except ones that sponsor J-1 non-immigrant visa. I heard foreigners can only get a limited license to practice in the states after graduation. this blows.
i am not sure if i should take out that loan if i cant pay it back...🙁

Hey I am an international student as well. Could you tell me the exact loan that you have applied for. The reason I ask is because when I had called up Access but they said if you are an international student you would need a cosigner for the loan (since you don't have credit history here in USA).

If they do have a loan that I can get without cosigner I will be very much interested in them.

Please reply soon
Thanks!!

:scared:

I have no family relations to whom I can ask for assistance with co-signing a loan so big--and I have so much questions regarding this loan. I thought taking out a loan for F1 student was impossible if you have no co-signer.

How good do your credit have to be? I'm in my mid-twenty--and so I don't have much credit history--and so the person who actually was approved for the loan without co-signing--how old was that person--and how difficult was it--and how good is the credit rating have to be???

I'm so curious--because I would love to apply--but I am afraid that after going through all these trouble--taking time off to go back to undergrad to do pre-requisite--and applying--and spending a lot of money I do not have to take the test and applying-- What if I get no loan???

And will the school accept you even if you are not approved for the loan yet?

Please if anyone can help me--it would save me from career disaster.

Would you tell me the details of how you obtained the loan--I would so much appreciate that because it would give me something to gauge how likely it is that I will be approved of a loan with out a co-signer.

Thanks!

Hi
Sounds interesting. I used to think that international students can apply for loan only with the help of cosigner. I want to know if it is possible for an international student to get loan without cosigner if one has no credit history in US.
Please let us know the details of your loan as lot of students have good scores, but they don't have cosigner.
Please reply ASAP.

Hi!
I am a foreign-trained dentist and currently I have the F-1 (student) visa. I would like to know if I can take a student loan only on my name, in case I am accepted at a school of dentistry in US. I have a joint account here since last year, maybe it helps in the future.
Please help me! Time is running so quickly!
Thank you!

hi guys
does anyone know if we need a cosigner for federal loans if we have NO credit history yet?i think one is eligible for federal loan if hav a GC.

if you are gc holder, then no need for credit history for federal loans.

my question is how the access group count credit year?

Is that from the date when first credit card is used in USA
or from the date when first bank account, like check or saving account?
Anybody can tell me?

Thanks

It is the first credit card u had.You should have 4 accounts (savings and checking acc are not included). One account should be 3 years old.If u get your crdit history report, u will understand what is an account and how many accounts u have currently.

I found that one can get Comprehensive Access Loan from Access group even if you dont have a green card cosigner. You also need not have a credit history. However, your husband or wife should have atleast 3 years or more of credit history. In such case your husband/wife would be a consigner for any amount for USA education. While Sponsored Access loan says it needs US citz/nationals or eligible noncitizens in practice they do consider any person in US with 3 or more years of credit history equal to there requirements. Just apply for the loan and see if you can qualify too. This will be helpful for a lot of International New Dental School students who came to US after marriage.
