hi, guys! I'm a dental student in China, and I want to go America in 2011,but I'm not sure:
1,Should I apply for the Phd research program in detal school?
2,Is it possible for me to get tuition wavier and financial aid to cover my living fees?

Currently ,my GPA is 3.6(88/100) toefl 101(speaking 23) GRE (in june 2010)
one-year research project for undergraduates
1 review in Chinese , 1 paper( IF 2.3) (Second author)

Thanks for your response, it really means a lot to me !!😍

BTW, are there any dental schools friendly to international students?

yeah there are so many schools which take international students and it is not that though to get into just need to have good nbde score..as u already have good toefl and gpa so u don't need to worry...and once u are into dental school ..u can enrole yourself in some research program because some schools pay for that.or u can do part time job in the school though its little tough as u won't get much time for that.but further it depends on you.If u are able to manage then its fine.or otherwise u can just take extra loan for the living too...not a big deal..every one does that.I hope my answer will help you.

Hi there,

First of you need to see why do you want to move to US?

If you goal is to practice in America as a dentist, then you need to attend 2 or 3 year of advanced standing DDS/DMD programs for this : you need to do well on NBDE part 1, some schools need part 2, good GPA and TOEFL, letters of recommendation (from your dean, professors etc). some schools need bench test as well which is a clinical test on maniquin where u need to make class 2, and crown preparation.
-You do not GRE here
-Unless you are a citizen/Green card holder, there is no financial aid from school and its super tough to work while attending an advanced standing DDS/DMD program. So you will be relying on Loans.

If you do not want to practice as clinical dentist, you can go for Phd or any other research field you like. Sorry i dnt knw much abt this, so wait for more responses to come your way for this option.

Hope it helps. good luck 🙂

the letters for recommendation must be from my country or from dentist workin at US?

you must have one from the dean of your dental school. THe others should be from people (dentists/prof) who can say something really great for you (prof's or ex-employers do just fine). Dentist working at US - yes, it can do just as fine but you have to have worked for him/her or observed at their practice.

Thank you sooo much! your information is quite encouraging!😍
There seems to be some chance for me , I searched some University webs(U Conn, U Tufts ...) but disappointedly to find many of them only offer conbined programs(DDS&PhD), I just want to do reasearch and get PhD degree in America. My plan is to find a job in my country...So can i only apply for the research and also get money?

The requirement to enroll in DDS is very strict, besides i have to take DAT first, I don't plan to challenge myself and it will cost a lot of money. You guys are really doing good job!

Thank you for your kindness! I got it, to practice dentistry is really tough, and it takes me years to reach the goal, I don't plan to challenge myself.
Yes, I just want to get a PhD degree and work in my country.

can any1 make some comments how it works for a dentist(dds) who`s on a non immigrant visa after he/she is done with d ddegree here in USA.

You will have to find an employer who is willing to sponsor you to obtain a green card

hello wadent, first of all real thx for ur advice and i still didnt apply to ece evaluation bec it will be same almost i guess and just plane to take my nbde 1 and nbde 2 too but nt sure if that will help as well and in a hope that i can find any anyway else that will help me to overcome my low gpa too. i just wanted ask u something more isn't it's wired that wes give low gpa's like that and give me same gpa as my orginal forgein transcrpit

WEs and ECe are converting the system to the one in USA (Grates ranging from 1 to 4.00). THey are also counting the tries that you had taken on a particular exam (if you had repeated it or not - you can check your papers and see if the attempts are counted). ANd lastly, if your grade system back home is from 1 to 4, you can't really expect more than your origianal gpa. But if you are using the system 2 to 6 back home, then your grade will be "converted" by some scale that they are using. Hope it helps!

PS. One more thing, WES and ECE evals aren't one and the same. Some schools only recognize the ECE evals (WES is known to give a higher grade than ECE).

hello, bombshell ...my home dental school use to give a gpa out of 4 and i got 2.4 in my orginal transcpit when evaluated by wes they gave me 2.39 which the same and ece will be almost same i guess ....what i dont understand why does ppl always have high wes while i did get same gpa as my foregin one beside my ece will be like around 2.4 too but many ppl get liek ece 2.4 and wes 3.5 something like that ....can u really explain it to me plz bec that irriatate me well. thx for ur real help in advance

Does your original diploma ask for a specific attempts on exam? That is the times you showed up on the exams. If you fail a class and go back and retake the exam, that will count like 2 attempts and one grade, which will make it go lower. I suggest you try with ece and see how it goes for you. If it is around the same, then call the WES people and ask them that yourself. There might still be a mistake at their end (also check the scores on your "translations" of your diploma. Hope it helps.

hello, bombshell ...i only repeated one course and it was "ws" for first time and then i got a b+ in it and in wes evalaution they counted my attempt already. i checked my score in my forein transcrpit and it give gpa ou of 4 and i got my 2.4/4 and ece would probly give me same i guess , the only point is how does wes give high evaluation to ppl who get low ece ? thx in advc

Hi, Shater! 🙂
Well, if the repeat of the course is shown on your diploma, then maybe that's why WES evaluated you lower than your original diploma (plus they do not count the pass/fail classes or something - it was specific for them). Anyways, I only did ECE because they are what most school want in the first place 🙂. Be careful with the WES coz only few schools require them.
As for why WES give more than ECE... well, hms, I have no idea, but it is common knowleage. Hope it helps! 🙂

hello bombshell, i just got in my orginal transcpit on course that i decide that not to get to do it and then later i did it and got B+ and wes counted it to me beside i know they dont count pass or fail and that is same as my forgin transcrpit dont count pass/fail. my experiance from wes they got error in evalaution as i got a grda of d+ in one course and in wes they gave it to me as D beside that wes seem like they copy paste my forgein transcrpit which i dont know where is the service and i emailed them all time with bunch of emails this week but no one answered me yet dont know why they dont respond to emails yet .

Back home pluses don't count. They are just a sign for you, but in transcripts and everything they are not taken in account. I think that's the situation with WES.
