I was just wandering if there are many pre-med international students on this web site. Please, repsond. It would also intenresting to see what grades and MCAT scores intenrational people get to be accepted into a med school. If you are in medical school, it would be useful to know what school you are attending.

Niksem -

I'm an international student (not U.S. citizen, not permanent resident). I've finished the MD/PhD application process. Applied to 11 schools, got accepted to 10. (Yes, Harvard rejected me without an interview because they said that international students cannot be accepted to their school).

I'm not outstanding in my application, but I had some really solid research experience (no pubs though), 3.9 GPA, 35T MCAT. I go to top-10 undergrad school. I hope that helps you.

Go into the MSTP Boulevard Thread, if you're interested in MD-PhD. It's much more convenient for international students, although finding funding is always an issue. (maybe you don't have that problem). Also look for posts from "Original" another SDN'er. He's also international and has hoardes of acceptances to boast.

I'm quasi-international (Canadian).

But you probably don't want to listen to me, as I have zero acceptances, and pretty good stats, so...

SonicHedgeho:

3.9 GPA and 35 MCAT!! and you are saying that it is not outstanding... I wish I had someting like that. Good luck with your education!

A friend of mine who is an international student interviewed a couple of weeks back at Harvard. He's international and he's only applied to MD programs. He also has super solid GPA and research experience.

I'm an international student with 3.8 GPA and 38 MCAT, one year of behavioral science research, and little else. 5 acceptances so far.

hi i am an international student but i have finished medical school and am applying for residency. i think u guys are making an excellent decision to go to medical school here. and judging from the interviews u guys are going to i am sure u r all going to match into really great medical schools. for an international student who has done medical school outside the usa , it is impossible to even think of going to the places that u guys have been interviewing at. and sadly this is true however outstanding the student is(unless hes won a nobel prize i guess).
what kind of visa are u guys going to be doing ur medical school on. and once u finish med school do u have to get a hospital to sponsor a visa for u guys or is there an alternate way. also do u guys have trouble getting loans for medical school bcos u r internationalstudents. i am just curios about these things and so am asking.

I am also an international student and I am blown away by some of the stats on this page.....and no, I aint got no acceptances yet...however, I am still very hopeful 🙂

Hi guys,
I am also a struggling international student out there but I have good news for you guys: It is not true that you have to have extraordinary stats to get in and I am a living proof of that: I have a 3.86 GPA and a 27 MCAT and I had interviews at Northwestern, UPenn, Georgetown, Wakeforest and Harvard (yes they do accept international students w/o a greencard... They even put them in a special category when the committee meets); I just received my acceptance letter from Northwestern today (I am still waiting for the other 4). I think that your experience, your involvements and how determined and motivated you are count for a lot. Anyway, I hope this give some people a confidence boost.
By the way, I did my undergrad in a public school in the south (nothing extraordinary there either) and I applied to 14 schools, 4 of which I have not heard from yet.
Good luck to all of you and don't let anybody tell you that you are not good enough to make it!!!

I am really encouraged ,Mame 🙂 .When did you interview @ upenn cos I interviewed there too.
I applied to 6 schools Yale, Upenn, Emory Baylor GW and albany....I have interviewed @ the first 4 and I have one coming up at albany (I secretly hope I dont have to go)
i had to withdraw my application from GW after being told I probably will not get in as an i-stdt even though they invited me for an interview!
😡

Hi Naijahopeful
Congrats on all your interviews  You can definetly be sure that you will get in somewhere!!!! I interviewed I UPenn on 2/2 and I have been killing my computer for the last 24h,trying to check the status page. I also applied to Emory, Baylor and GW but all 3 of them rejected me outright... So you are already doing better than me
Good luck even though I am sure you will be just fine!
By the way, are you from Nigeria?

Hi Mame

I agree with your post. But a word of correction. What I meant was that Harvard MD/PhD does not accept international students because their funding is strictly NIH. They *do* accept students for both New Pathways and HST. Also, some funding is available if you want to do straight MD. But my story was different.

Sorry to hear about your funds issues at Harvard sonichedgehog. I didn't know it was different for the MD/PhD. But apparently you have plenty other choices! Congrats and Good Luck.

•••••Welcome to SDN! representin' for the Naija up in here lol . I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you. Holler.

Maaan! Why do Nigerians always have to take over everywhere they go!!??? Why do they always have to be a majority!? 😀
Anyway, I got much love for the Naija people so it's all good!!!
Naijahopeful (or Piko?) What's up with Penn? I got waitlisted (tier1). But that's alright, I still have my bird in hand, and a couple more schools to hear from...

Hey everyone!
Thanks for the luv...Original, Kito (my compatriots) and Mame (hey, with 100+ million folks, it's pure stats 🙂 )

Got on the UPenn purgatory list aka Tier 1 waitlist too. I'm pretty disappointed, actually *very* disappointed since it was my first choice. Oh well, life goes on and the struggle continues, not so?

cheers,
a*gal
