So I was looking through the Queensland medical board information about the 10-year moratorium...As it applies to this Medicare number, which is for private practise, if I wish to work in a hospital then I don't need to worry about this...am I correct?!? Plus, since it starts once you get internship or PR, if I wanted to be a surgeon, that's like 7 years extra training anyways, so I would only have another 3 years to work in a hospital before being able to work in private practise...is this true?!?

Also, how hard is it for an international student to obtain an internship after graduation? I've looked it up, and it seems like people just place their preferred placement in a number system, and then it is completely randomized about whether you get your spot or not...is this true?!? The computer system seems to put everyone in their first choice, and once it has done this, it goes through and looks at all the places that are overbooked, and chooses people at random to put them in their second choices. Then it takes another look at the overloaded positions, and picks people and puts them in their third choices, and so on and so on, until all positions have been filled. So I guess my question is, how do they differentiate between australian citizens and international students in regards to this process?!?

Loads of threads on this subject, so you might want to do a search.

But in answer to your latter question, the "preferences" for internship placement are as follows (in order of decreasing preference):

Aussie citizen, Aussie med school trained, in-state
Aussie citizen, Aussie med school trained, out of state (ie, a NSW resident applying for a SA spot)
Non-citizen, Aussie med school trained, in state
Non-citizen, Aussie med school trained, out of state
Non-citizen, non-Aussie med school trained

Thanx Kimberli for your quick response. I've been looking through all the posts for a while now, but no one seems to have concrete knowledge on the way the 10-year moratorium works. I mean, if it only applies to doctors wishing to do private practice, or if it applies to doctors at hospitals or even doing residency?!?

Good question, Peter! 10 years moratorium is confusing and makes all the difference in the world if you're planning on specializing after school. Someone please shed light on this, pitman, maybe??? 😕
