I need some advice from current residents.

I have a free elective month (couldn't get derm) and can fill it with rheumatology, plastic surgery, or an easy month of path. How helpful would it be to have a month of rheum. experience vs plastics (not sure what operating experience I will get, if any)? My other electives are radiology, neurology, and optho.

Thanks.

It is definitely of benefit to know more about connective tissue disorders: PMR, Sjogrens, Scleroderma etc and learn about immunosuppressive drugs. It would also be of great benefit to learn excellent suturing techniques doing plastics. ie both are good - pick the one you would enjoy more

1st choice is ophtho if you will apply to that program

2nd choice is plastics if you get some hands on experience

I think the rheumatology rotation would be the most beficial.

There are so many rheumatological conditions in ophthalmology.
Understanding how these patients are cared for by the rheum colleagues should help you greatly in the future.
