I'm an MS4 who did not match into ophtho this year but matched into a good prelim medicine program. I'm set on ophtho and my goal is to fill an opening if it presents itself, or to reapply this fall. Does anyone know of any programs that are expanding and adding a PGY2 spot in 2015? Is there any other source besides the SF Match vacancy list for finding openings? Thanks a lot in advance.

From SFMatch, it appears as though Brown and Univ. South Carolina may have open spots for next year:

Can anyone comment on palmetto ?
Are they on probation or having funding issues?

Why would a good school like Brown be so lopsided in approving the additional PGY2 position so late and so out of sync with the application timelines? Geez, I bet many top applicants didn't even get an interview there during the application round. Now they have an opening?!

Brown as a school does not equal brown as an ophthalmology residency program. I was told by my advisors that their program was having some issues a few years back. If I'm not mistaken they downsized spots a few years ago and maybe now are regaining one?

I think it was one of those situations where they had external funding for 3 spots, but couldn't provide the supplemental internal funding to support the 3rd position, and now they can. And if I'm not mistaken they are actually looking to start someone sometime between oct and Jan, 2014, and additionally in 2015. Definitely worth the attempt
