Hi everyone - I matched into a separate medicine internship/advanced anesthesiology program. My internship program has scheduled me for 12 weeks of ICU, plus I will be doing 4 months of ICU in my anesthesia program. I know that the ACGME guidelines for anesthesiology are to complete no more than 2 blocks of ICU during the intern year, but I was unsure how strict this is. I don't want to be a complainer and I am happy to do my fair share of work in the ICU (and would prefer extra ICU time over floor time anyways) but don't want problems down the line. Anyone know if this is an issue or not?

Thanks!!

You can do more than 2 months of ICU your intern year but you can't count more than that toward your requirement of 4 during your 3 year anesthesia residency.

ICU months do not always have to count as critical care months. For example a month of MICU can count as a month of critical care or a month of internal medicine. A month on CCU can count as cardiology or critical care. This is how you can end up doing a lot more than 2 months of ICU your intern year. You just cannot "double count" months.
