Dear SDN,

Let's say you finish PGY1 and get a state license. I have done some reading prior to posting and I see it would be unwise to think one could easily "practice medicine" with simply these qualifications.

However, does completing PGY1 and obtaining a state license qualify one for "nonclinical" jobs one would not otherwise be qualified for as a US grad?

I totally apologize if this has been previously answered. I tried to search for it but not that hard.

Best regards and thanks for reading,

- d. M.

Nope...you can get a job at Starbuck's with or without completing an internship and getting your medical license.

Not sure what kind of "non-clinical" jobs you're talking about but, if they are of the consulting/management variety, nobody's really going to care that you were a scutmonkey for a year. You may be slightly less uncompetitive for those types of jobs than someone coming straight out of med school but not so much that anyone would notice.

Not quite sure what you mean by non-clinical jobs. If a job is non-clinical, like the previous poster said, you don't even need a clinical degree, right? Please clarify which jobs you're thinking of.

Also, after finishing your PGY-1 year and getting your state license you will be able to work in places like the Indian Health Service. It will also allow you to moonlight if your residency program allows it. The only difficulty would be with malpractice coverage when moonlighting. So yes, you could "easily" work in some places, but you most likely will not be able to get into insurance plans and get hospital privileges unless you're board certified or board eligible.

finish internship and get your state license, you could theoretically work anywhere. most licenses (i have 2- california and nevada) state "physician and surgeon"...

but you can't state that you're board eligible. nor board certified.

and you might have trouble getting hospital privileges, as you wouldn't qualify for the rights and privileges of any specialty. but there is a "fund of general knowledge" (or some similar comment) on a lot of hospital privilege paperwork.

but would it be impossible? i don't know. but you certainly could try and find out. it likely wouldn't be smart to do, but there are quite a few people who think they have to finish residency, when you really don't.

Can any body else offer more suggestions regarding this and where to look for clinical opportunities? Amost everything I looked into a while back required board eligibility or certification.

I found something interesting though, a Licensed physician could apply for board eligibility through the american board of general practice. They require that you complete a one-year curriculum online before attaining board eligibility. Can anyone confirm or clarify this. Thanks!

Most boards not recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties are essentially worthless. Don't waste your time with the American Board of general practice.

You don't need an active medical license to qualify for many non-clinical jobs. Those that require a license will generally indicate that in the job description.
