internship/residency equivelant in UK

Hey! I'm interested in specializing in internal medicine (small animal) but I desperately want to live in Edinburgh again for a bit (studied there in undergrad for a year). Anyone know how their specialization works and if I were to do the equivelant of an internship or residency there if I would be eligible for boards in the US?

http://www.acvim.org/BoardCertification/Requirements.aspx The ACVIM sort of makes it sound like no, you can only take boards if you match with one of their approved programs, but i feel like there could be some exception for someone who was ECVIM boarded (though I can't find anything). If you did a residency program there, you would be eligible for ECVIM boards, which should be roughly the same thing. I'm not sure it would be worth the time and hassle to take both ECVIM and ACVIM boards though, just knowing how insanely rigorous and difficult board exams are (plus expensive?).

If you did an internship there, you should still be able to apply for US residencies post-completion which would allow you to go through ACVIM. Alternatively, you could just go work overseas for a few years for the experience equivalent and then do a residency back in the US too. That will probably be a tougher route to go for matching to a spot, just because a lot weighs on having good connections and LORs, but people certainly successfully do it. I'd get in touch with your SAIM specialists at school and see what kind of advice they can offer you, particularly if anyone is European. Be sure to ask for multiple opinions too.

Great, thanks for the information! I have definitely sent multiple emails out to clinicians and such. Just figured someone would have experience.

Many of our specialists here at RVC (near London) are ACVIM trained, and thus most of our residencies here are approved by the ACVIM. I believe they ACVIM just requires a certain number of supervisors who are ACVIM diplomates. In general internship and residencies here in the UK are very similar to those in the US, the only difference is that its much more common for people to do a few years in practice before either their internship or residency. A tip for searching - they are often called clinical training scholarships here (a senior clinical training scholarship = residency, and junior clinical training scholarship = internship). Not sure if Ediburgh is exactly the same, but I would suspect many of the UK schools also have ACVIM diplomates!

I have heard *rumors* that in the next few years ACVIM/ECVIM will be interchangeable, at least where equine is concerned. I would imagine small animal would try and move in that direction as well.
