What is the difference between an internship and a residency? I know the internship is the first year but do you have to reapply to become a resident? Do you get paid during the internship?

Thanks!~

1. Residency = Internship Year (PGY1*) + remaining years in your training (PGY2 to PGYn)

2. Internship (as you said) = 1st year of residency

3. Resident = One broke doctor 🙁

You get paid, but not very much (low end may start around $40K, maybe more; I think pay goes up incrementally - not a whole bunch - from year to year - can someone confirm or deny?)

*PGY=Post-Graduate Year

internship is just the name for the first year of your residency. you don't have to reapply after that year to continue your residency. i think the average-ish salary for an intern is ~$35,000, and it usually goes up maybe $4000 or so each year. that's just an educated guess, though

Heal and Teach is correct in what she says. And residency pays do increase, the most top out at around $50,000 or so.

There are some set ups in which you have to reapply to a specialty program after an intern year (a transitional year is one such case).

Maybe post in allo and or general residency forums...

$35k may seem like a lot now, but it's just shy of $17/hr working 40 hours/week and around $8.41 working 80hrs/week. Not so much when you look at it that way.

Dude, ever hear the phrase tongue in cheek? And from what I understand from some friends who are residents and actually worked it out one day, you are being way optimistic as to how much you wind up making per hour.

I think my favorite note on the topic comes from house of god when the fat man is putting the student to work and going to take a nap. He points out that his salary is set, so the less hours he works, the more he make per hour, while the student is paying a set rate, so the more he works, the less he is paying per hour. Gotta love the logic...

Mc...take the spoon out of your a**

Hi

Forget the big sirloin for now. Take another third out for taxes, and that's what you've got in the end of the month. Not very good, since you just can't have a second job. And some will have to start repaying student loans and all that.

I am currently a resident, and I'm a bit diasppointed with this stipend. We work a lot, and replace a lot of techs, nurses, PAs...
