Internships and Research during undergrad

I realize that internships are very important.

My question is...
If the school I want to attend doesn't have internships close by during the school year, is it acceptable to only do summer internships while doing research during the school year?

I think this is probably what most students do, no? My university doesn't have any internship opportunities during the school year, either!

ooh, glad i'm not alone! Is it really that common thought? I thought most students did internships during the year!
