So I took a year off to do clinical research in between third and fourth year. Should I check the "interruption in medical education" box in ERAS in the miscellaneous section towards the end? This was a planned year in a 5 yr program so I'm just not sure if I need to check this box/if it will look bad if I check this box.

Thanks!

If you are enrolled in a 5 year school where everyone does a year of research (like Learner College of Medicine), then no. You didn't take a break, that's what your school does.

If you are in a 4 year school and took a year for research (like an HHMI, or Duke fellowship, etc), then yes.

Either way, it will be fine.

Does this apply only if you are not registered as a student with the school during this research year? I added a research year for an in-house project but was technically still a full-time student and performed some elective rotations throughout the year.

If the typical student graduates in 4 years and you are graduating in 5, then you should comment that your training was interrupted. This would include an MD/MPH (or MD/MBA) program, and would include a research year. Note that it will be perfectly fine -- just because your medical education was "interrupted" doesn't make it a bad thing.
