Two questions
1. How feasible would it be to finish up the initial active duty obligation say for the army and then transfer to the navy or air force after if wanting to stay with the military? Is this difficult to do in practice and what would be involved? Would a 2 year aegd make it easier?

2. Is it possible for again say an army dentist to complete active duty obligation at a navy or air force base? I heard an exchange of some sort would be involved but not sure of the details.

Are you already Army?

I am simply a student, but I did read on these forums that you can do an HPSP transfer. A loose quote was something along the lines that you can find a Navy Dental HPSP student and trade him/her for your Army Dental HPSP... but it'd be difficult to find someone that would want to trade Navy for Army.

1. theoretically possible, but only after your ADSO is done. I have had 2 commanders (army) that were prior Navy. They got out, did private practice and then came back AD during the wars when the Army wanted/needed people more than other services. They were OS and Ortho. If you want to get out of the Army because of their BS, there is plenty of new BS in the Navy or AF. So don't think anyone really has it that much better than you, they don't.

2. While there are residencies that are co-located with other services (like SAAMC or Walter Reed). i.e. you would train at a location, possibly with another branch, but afterwards you would be stationed at a Army post and support that branch. Commanders can work out a deal to get support from other branches on a limited/short term basis if a particularly rare specialist (i.e. OS) is out/gone/hurt, but this is rare and not the norm. In Korea we worked on all services (AF, Navy, Marines) because army has the greatest presence. But I have never worked in an AF clinic or Navy clinic, nor did their dentists work in ours.

I have never heard of anyone trade HPSP. The logistics of that seem impossible.

The only I ever heard of transferring was from AF/Navy into the Army. That's because the Army is the biggest branch (more troops to care for) and therefore, usually, has higher needs for dentists.

Why do you want to leave the Army? Do you really think there's something that's better about the other services?

Honestly, each service has its quirks and they are all comparable.
