Anyone have experience/horror stories with moving across state lines and moving companies - specifically? I know it's often hit or miss with these companies, and you usually are stuck with your local moving rep, but I'm reaching out to Mayflower, United (those two are owned by same corporation), Allied. I'm avoiding Bekins for no other reason than a bad experience years ago, and I think they are going under anyway...

Move is Florida to Colorado. 😀

Also, horror stories or happy stories with automobile moves? I've been quoted about 950$ for getting an XC90 Volvo SUV about 2000 miles, open carrier. Seems pretty fair when I reviewed a batch of quotes. (all within 100$ of one another). I saw a car moving website had lots of review and nixed any company that had more than a handful of complaints. I'm down to two now.

THANKS!

It sounds like you're looking for a full-service type move. For the residents who are in the poor-do-it-yourself type move, we have used ABF for 3 cross country moves and have been pretty satisfied. It's pretty comparable to U-haul or Penske once you factor in gas, but without the hassle of driving your own truck.

Sorry, yes, I'm only packing. Not doing anything else.

Other than stressing in general.

Moves aren't fun.

Getting settled post-move, is FUN!

Thanks Geo,

I just used Bekins from Seattle to Denver. Expensive, but very satisfied with the customer service, and with the folks packing and unpacking the household. My N of one.

I used Golan's a few years ago to go from Chicago to SF. Fair price, no funny-business, stuff arrived on time, with really only one broken item. The claim-filing process was sufficiently onerous that I let it slide. I would use them again.

Do you remember your poundage and final price? I'm headed just south of Denver...

Thanks!

Never heard of em, I'll check it out. Thx

ETA: Scratch that, specific to Chicago.

Moving Friday, interstate about 300-350 miles. Even with movers(doing my own packing and most of the boxes have been moved during trips between the cities over the past couple months), this is just a horrible experience. It might be worse by the fact I'm going to sublet my current place, so I'm more worried about how things will be for that individual than I am with my own situation.

When looking for movers, use Yelp/review sites at your own risk because a few bad reviews will make you paranoid.

Good luck

All the big carriers use the same subcontractors anyway. And from multiple experiences they all suck arse. I just used united out of Atlanta to Texas and had a horrible and pricey experience

You read my mind. I had a horrible experience with Bekins also.

As you said, everyone will probably have their share. Unfortunately I can't recommend any particular service. Just learn from my mistake: assume the delivery will be late, even if they swear up and down they will have your stuff at your destination by a certain date. They give a range, but you need to add a few days (in my case about a week) to the outer limit of their range.

So just pack enough in your car/suitcase (something that won't be shipped) that you can survive for about a week if necessary.

Document exactly what goes into each box w/proof (ex: photograph) -- I had things turn up missing or damaged.

All of these guys are crooks until proven otherwise.

Best of luck.

Our last movers (some gov't contractors, don't remember who they were exactly) lost our barbecue grill. They swore up and down that they delivered it, which was odd since it wasn't on the list of stuff we signed for. Then they said we must've never had one. Eventually we just gave up and forgot about it. Nothing terrifically fancy, but we were out a few hundred bucks.

About a year later I found it. I was idly Google Earthing our old house ... and there it was, sitting behind the back fence.

The wankers didn't feel like loading it, I guess, so they hid it. I asked the tenants about it, and they said 'yeah were wondering what was up with the barbecue grill back there' ...

Moving sucks.

:wow::wow:

Got bids, guaranteed from three local big
Moving companies (allied, united, mayflower).

5600
6600
7700.

amazing how they could be SO disparate. I'm almost afraid to take
The 5600 because seems too good to be true as compared to the 7700.
Though mayflower estimated 2000 pounds more the the others.

It's true, moving sucks!!!

Moving sucks.

Movers are suppose to be here at noon. Maids at 4 pm. Sleep a little, then driving 6 hours with a packed Escape. In the past two days part of my bed frame broke(in limbo), audio system stopped functioning(repaired), and garbage disposal broke(repaired). Each time I thought of this story and it got me thru my Walter White mental breakdown moment. I expect to have a minimum of 3 more moments over the next 24 hours.

Did they come out to your place or was it done on the website/phone?

good luck with it all, i hear you loud and clear!

as for me, they all came and did a walkthrough. the lower two bids were really 200LBs apart. quite legit. idiot rob me blind dude, estimated 2000lbs over the others, and thus the high price. kind of INSANE. i think they were just bidding themselves out.
