Hi everyone! I am in desperate need of advice. Here is the situation. I have an interview at Roseman in late November. The cost to go to the interview would cost me over $500. I have had 4 interviews so far. I get extremely nervous at interviews so I stutter and many times talk in circles. One interview I believe went well. During the other three, my nerves took over. I am hesitant to pay over $500 to go to an interview. It is not my top school. However, I don't want to cancel the interview and they could possibly be the only school to accept me. To prepare for the other interviews, I prepared for weeks to ensure my success. Once I go into the interviews, my mind just blanks. I don't want to pay that much and my mind goes blank again.

Does anyone have any thoughts or opinions to whether I should cancel or not?

Thank you all!

You say the problems here are:
1) It would cost you over $500 and
2) You are hesitant to pay $500 for an interview.

I have two questions for you:
1. Do you have $500 to spend now?
2. How much would you pay for an acceptance and career as an dentist?

I do have $500 as of now, but I would be extremely low on funds to pay for my commute to school. I guess I am a little hesitant to pay so much with my track record of bad interviews.

I'm sorry 🙁. I do understand the financial hardship but this is really your call whether to attend the interview or not. You said that you didn't perform as well as expected in the previous interviews. So here is another interview opportunity...Do you want to keep improving and take that challenge or moving on and risking the chance of acceptance?

Random question: Are you working now?

Is the interview post or pre December. If it is pre december - then go. If it is post December, then see if you're accepted anywhere else and if you are then forget about it as you'll need that money to secure a spot.

Good point. I work about 8-16 hours a week so just enough to cover gas. I tried scheduling it as late as I could in hopes I would get another interview. It's really a hard decision.

Just go, and while you're there just remember this isn't even your top choice so that should ease your nerves a lot. Also, what have you been doing to prepare for these interviews?

I've been looking at the most common interview questions on google and also here on SDN. I practice each questions answer. I have mock interviews with my family and fiance. I practice a lot. Once the nerves hit, I'm finished. For example, at my last interview, I forgot my major. WORST thing ever.

Oh wow! Just relax! Trust me it isn't that serious, be calm. Definitely go to this interview and relax think of it as if you've already been accepted and you'll be good

this is your call..
Nobody else can make the decision for you.
Just like you said, this could be the only school that ultimately accept you, you just don't know how it will play out in the end.
Don't toy with idea of not going to some of them yet, just suck it up and go.

I'd say go and practice out loud with friends. If you don't get in and have to reapply it will cost a lot more and waste a year out of your life. Plus you'll have to do things to improve your application like take more classes. Hope that this is helpful. Good luck

I'm in the same boat. I live in the PNW, so besides my interview at UW I need to fly all over the country which equates to a lot of money on airplane tickets. I just landed a pre-Dec interview at Michigan and the flight cost $500. It's a lot of money, but I'll make it work. I'm thankful for each interview I receive and plan to attend all of them.

if you have a track record of bad interviews, I think its pretty obvious you should go to as many as you can since you might not get acceptances (due to bad interviews).

I think that the general opinion is that anyone should go to every interview they are invited to until they get an acceptance. In your case, since you tend to get nervous during interviews (I do as well) and because you don't feel overly confident about 3/4 of the interviews you've already went on, I especially think you should go on this one. I understand that money is a big issue, but spending $500+ now is nothing compared to the cost of reapplying if, in the worst case scenario, you aren't accepted anywhere this cycle.

Ask yourself if Roseman is a school you want to go to. If you can't see yourself legitimately going there maybe just bank on those other 4 interviews and save the cash. If you want to go there, definitely go.

Good luck! I am interviewing at Roseman around the same time (Nov 21st) and am in a similar situation (I've had 4 interviews already, AND it would cost me $500 to go, which is a lot for me). I think I am still going to go though. Think of it as an investment in your future 🙂

I dont know what to say on your situation, but if I were you I would definitely go to the interview. If you dont get in anywhere, you will have to spend a lot more money reapplying.

Interview advice:
Talk to the interviewer like you would with a friend or classmate. This interview is not like those super formal ones where you have to plan everything your going to say and give examples for every little thing. If you go in thinking this is my last shot, and I really need this to go well, you will freak out as you have done, so pretend like you don't give a $hit and you will do great, may seem counter-intuitive but it works.
