Hello, I have a conflict with my UOP and UCSF interviews. I was wondering if anyone has had any similar experiences and if either one (or both) of the schools are accommodating in rescheduling interviews. I already accepted UOP's interview, and recently found out that UCSF scheduled my interview on the same date. Thanks!

This is actually a pretty common for the San Francisco schools. They schedule interview dates on the same day in order to make you choose between one of them. Both schools have such huge egos they like to compete over applicants and prove that they are better. Whichever one you choose, the other will automatically drop you. You are out of luck buddy.

Thanks for your input.
That's really sad if it's true, but that also sounds like a lot of work for both schools to go through just to coordinate something like that. They're both prestigious schools so I hope that's not how they select their candidates 🙂

I don't really think that is fair for you to say. Have you contacted these schools and gotten that exact answer out of them? I don't think it is fair to tell the OP that he has no chance at getting an interview from both schools and he will be rejected by one school. You are not an adcom, and unless this exact situation happened to you personally, I wouldn't throw that out there so freely.

OP, just call UCSF, and just be completely honest with them. Let them know that you are very interested in their school but you had already committed to the interview with UoP before you were contacted by them. Let them know you are very interested in their program and would greatly appreciate a different interview date. I'm not saying it will work, but it is worth a shot. Tell them you were put in a tough position and you don't feel it is fair to completely lose your chance at their program simply because you accepted another interview PRIOR to their offer. Honesty is the best bet. Good luck and keep us posted please. I would love some facts rather than some speculation from pre-dents.

OP- I think rcl91 is trying to knock out the Cali competition. 😀

RSalha is right. The best course of action is to keep the interview that you scheduled first and ask to reschedule UCSF. If they allow you to reschedule, you're fine (they wouldn't waste an interview slot on you if they were going to reject you afterwards). I highly doubt a school would be so petty as to not offer you an alternate date just because you had another interview. Schools know good applicants receive many interviews.

rc191 is partially right with those schools, I've been to UoP and met their ASDA study body. They are highly competitive with UCSF. I am not going to say that one school will reject you if you interview at another. But I would suggest you use a different reason to ask for an interview date change. Instead of saying you have an interview at UoP or UCSF, just tell them if they have another prior or later interview date open for you as you will be traveling to another dental school for an interview. Be as vague as possible without really lying. Good luck! Both schools are great!!!!

I'm sure that the school are competitive, but you can't really tell me that a school is going to reject you because you were offered another interview before they got to you. This is the thing that bothers me about SDN, people post things as fact, without having factual knowledge. They speculate, and then that is how rumors spread. Now that someone has read rcl91's post, they may spread that "rumor" to another person, and then the streak continues. This is why SDN tends to lose credibility, because people tend to be so certain about admissions issues without contacting the school first.

rcl91 did not say that he thought that would happen, or told OP to try to contact the school, they stated it as it was a fact, and that really upsets me. Do you guys see why this is so frustrating to me? We are not adcoms, we are pre-dent students, and unless you have experienced that exact situation with those exact schools, you should not offer advice as a fact, you should offer advice as an opinion.

If they REALLY want to compete with each other, I believe the best way to snag applicants would be to "out-scholarship" each other. That could definitely win me over! Hah!
Anyhow, if your stats are good, both schools will want you (and they've clearly demonstrated interest by offering you interviews). I don't think that interviewing at one would make the other one drop you. If anything, the fact that you're interviewing at multiple schools means that you're a desirable candidate. Why would they want to risk losing you just because you're interviewing elsewhere? It seems like they would rather end up with those candidates who had multiple options because they were so great.
Call the schools, and it's probably a good idea to be vague, but don't lie (just like LBJ6 said!). I think this is a no-brainer, too, but make sure you first try to reschedule with the school that is your second choice. Best of luck!

+1 Beautiful answer, I couldn't have said it better myself

Thank you really for all your help! I'm still trying to get in contact to reschedule but I'll let you know how it turns out.

why would you call UCSF and tell them that you have a commitment at another school...ESPECIALLY UOP? that sounds like a terrible thing to do. gotta come up with a better excuse than that IMO.

but at the end of it all..having both UCSF and UOP interviews is an amazing accomplishment. congrats and good luck with trying to organize the dates to your liking

haha holy crap guys. I was being sarcastic. Just call them up like a normal human being and I'm certain they will understand. No need to freak out over such a small thing.

No school is going to reject you because you already have an interview on that date...

lol, but whether you were being sarcastic or not...it would not be a wise thing to tell UCSF that you want to change the date bc it conflicts with UOP, or any school for that matter.

I have personally had to reschedule almost all of my interviews due to having conflicts between two interviews for the same day. Just call them and tell them that you can't make it for that date. Most schools didn't inquire beyond that and they just accommodated me to another date, others inquired why i couldn't make it and I told them that I was simply out of town that particular date. I didn't apply to any of the 2 schools you mentioned but I don't see why they'll deny you the opportunity. Ohh, almost forgot. I only had one of the schools (meharry) that didn't want to reschedule my interview. Funny enough, i wanted to reschedule because i was having issues finding a flight. It seems like they got upset and withdrew my application without letting me know. Let us know what finally happened...

in the invitation email, UCSF says that they can only re-schedule due to you having an exam or emergency I believe.

check in your email

I would consider this an emergency

UCSF has a pretty big ego. My friend called to reschedule her interview. They said that either you keep the interview date or they would withdraw your application from the interview pool. Date conflict doesn't seem like emergency. I think you should take UoP because I heard they interview to accept.

Sorry rcl91, but as you know people sometimes give false information on here, and I didn't want OP to think that he just lost his shot because someone was being a jerk haha, sorry for getting worked up, it has been a stressful time for all of us haha

Thanks for all your guys' help, especially RSalha17.

Update: I dropped by UCSF Admissions today and told them about my conflict. Ms. Steer was very kind and told me that I am able to reschedule with the confirmation email and attachments from the other dental school. They were very accommodating!! 👍

Hope that helps!
