I have my first EM residency interview at a good program but in a neighboring state. Just got an email from a local program I really want asking if I can take a cancellation the day before that interview, both are this week. Should I cram in the extra interview then making a program I would really like my first or say I can’t and wait for a formal offer email?

They say if I can’t make they will try to find another time. What does try mean?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Would it disrupt your travel plans? Would it make your performance at the second interview different?

It sounds like they are trying to interview you, and thought they’d offer you a short notice interview because you are local, but will still interview you if you are unable to make it on short notice.

I don't think I quite understand the dilemma. Are you saying doing the local interview on the date they asked isn't feasible for you due to travel plans to the other interview? If so, then say you can't take that date and ask for another date.

I promise you that scheduling interviews is a hassle for everyone and no one is going to fault you for having to pick a different date. Everyone knows that people go on multiple interviews.
