So i emailed Cornell asking to reschedule the interview and was basically told that if the conflict was due to another interview, I should reschedule the other interview since most schools have more flexible interview dates.

Here's the problem: Michigan asked me 2 weeks before Cornell and is willing to reimburse my ticket costs (I don't think Cornell will). I've already purchased my Michigan ticket.

But I still really really really want to interview at Cornell. Should I just be up front and honest about Michigan and see if Cornell can reschedule me for November - saying pretty please?

It's interesting that they ask you to reschedule "the other" interview instead of rescheduling theirs.

My bet is Michigan will not be too happy about that if you "quit on them" right now.

For me, I use a first come, first serve policy. Once I have confirmed my interview for a particular school, I stick to it. It not only makes your life easier (with all the scheduling and all) but also shows respect to the school that you're interviewing at. Just my 2 cents.

I totally agree. I just need to figure out how to tell Cornell that I can't reschedule Michigan but in a nice enough way that they'll reschedule me for November - sigh. I know this is not a bad problem but it's frustrating nonetheless.

I want to say go with the blunt approach. Just tell them your other commitment cannot be altered, as your plans were made far in advance.

Who does Cornell think they are, anyway?

I got the same reply. I think I'm just going to be adamant, tell them that I've already bought the tickets, etc. It's rude to Michigan otherwise.

not sure if you guys already know this, but cornell only has 2 interview dates and does not schedule interviews for small groups like most schools do... knowing this when i applied, i actually scheduled other interviews around those 2 dates even without knowing whether cornell would even offer me an interview.

i really doubt cornell would change their application policy due to any particular person's adamancy.. i actually think that it would not be such a big problem to switch dates at michigan because i think they have a lot of interview dates.. sure it might "affect" your application, but it certainly doesn't make the difference between acceptance and not...

i think michigan would just switch you immediately without even pressing the matter, whereas trying to argue with cornell when they already told you the way they run things is more detrimental imo...

The problem isn't with changing the interview dates but with plane tickets. I understand there are only two dates and am not requesting a third date - just the second date for which I kept open in hopes of a Cornell interview. As much as I like Cornell (and believe me, I do - I really do) - if they can't understand automatically accepting your first interview invite and are unwilling to let me switch to the second interview date, then maybe they aren't the program for me.

ditto. Well said.

Interview drama no more! Successfully rescheduled for Nov. 16!!!

The interview dates are posted on the Tri-I website every year way before invites go out. Unfortunately most applicants don't actually visit that page and/or fail to scroll down to the part with the interview dates. Next year I will try and post them on the interview thread when people start getting interviews so that they can schedule around those days. I actually had to call a different school and reschedule for the second time when I interviewed. Since most schools have multiple days they usually don't mind.

I'm sorry you guys had a frustrating time with scheduling, but let me assure you that the staff is actually really responsive to students needs and totally available to help us. And on behalf of all the students we are really excited to meet you guys and hope you have a great time when you come out here!

I'm sure Cornell has superb staff members and I'm totally psyched about visiting - these little snafus will happen time to time I guess and I feel bad for making them accommodate me, but I'm glad they did.

I'm open on Oct 26, but they didn't invite me
