After searching for a technician job for about a month, I finally got a call today for an interview on Sunday. I've never had a job that required a formal interview, so I was just wondering what to expect. Is there anything i should do to prepare?

EDIT: the interview is at a walmart

I actually had my interview at CVS, but I assume it's probably similar.

Dress appropriately, I'm a girl and basically found the average business casual outfit, meaning, black dress pants and a button up shirt. I believe I wore black flats.

My interview was short, but my pharmacy manager said she really liked me because I seemed to always have a happy attitude and that I would smile a lot. (I had to go in a couple of times to keep asking about a position. Persistence pays off!)

She handled all of the paperwork, had me sign some papers and gave me a folder with necessary information about working in a pharmacy. I had to finish some computer things (which I did at home) and had to bring that back before the first day. She also made me get drug tests and such, basically had to go and pee in a cup.

Oh, I also didn't have a tech license nor any previous pharmacy work at the time, but I made that very clear from the beginning and she didn't seem to mind, I just had extra computer things to do beforehand. Most of her questions had to do with scheduling and such, but that was pretty much it. Short and sweet 🙂

Stay positive and good luck with your interview!

I just went for an interview yesterday at CVS and pretty much was hired on the spot. She liked the fact that I was being persistent( I called up like 10 timed before getting an interview). I will be going for a drug test tomorrow and maybe even start this sunday or monday. Make sure you are well-dressed and the pharmacy manager will not be asking many complicated questions. Answer the questions honestly and let them know if you have any future plans. I actually told them I will be going away for 10 days next month and she said it is fine.
They normally will just ask when are you available, do you have any experience, and etc. Nothing hard. Just relax:laugh:

Good Luck.

One pharmacy job and suddenly the guy is a pro.

Just teasing bottlecap, no offence intended.

Wow, lol.... Walmart is on a hiring spree! I just got a job at walmart like 2-3 days ago, although, it is not a pharmacy job. I worked at Walmart last year for 4 months (not a pharmacy job either) and quit because I wanted to have more study time and I couldn't get a pharmacy job ever. I was pissed and I even put in the walmart computer system that I wanted a pharmacy job for 4 months. Not one call! Anyways, the irony is that a couple months after I quit, the store added more new employees in the pharmacy. Moral of the story is to make sure you get the pharmacy job on the first interview and be firm on it. I had 4 interviews last year for 2 different positions in the store. If you have more than 3 interviews...the company most like changed its mind and it is most likely not for a pharmacy job. Be firm and you will get the job!

Anyways, back to the interview....

In my first interview last year, they asked me about what are my weakness. I thought it was a hard question because I didn't think about this myself ever. So be prepared to think about yourself a day or two before interview. Think about your strength and weaknesses. Then think about worst case scanerio situations in the store. This worst case scanerio is tough too like heres a question they asked me in the interview a couple days ago, "If you had a deadline to reach and a customer is asking you a question. What would you do?" That is the toughest question of all of them because there are different kinds of deadlines to reach like what if it was a 5 minute deadline? Anyways, the answer is the customers are your first priority, no matter what deadline is. You can work deadline tomorrow. But, this is from my assisant manager, so the answer can vary to different managers, I think. The interview will have those kinds of questions about scanerios and what you would do.

Good luck with the interview and I hope you get the pharmacy job! I been looking for 2 years and I am still looking!

EDIT: I forgot to include Walmart does the pee cup drug test. Also, it varies in stores but I know for sure that in my store, the pharmacy techs will go to the same orientation as the sales associates in a week or too after the pee cup test. This means you might play a board game and learn all about customer experience. My orientation is this tuesday, yay! The pharmacy techs also dress the same as sales associates in my store, which is blue polo shirt and slacks. Since I am a male, I went in my interview with black slacks, dress shoes, and nice button up shirt I think...lol I forgot what shirt I wore exactly. Private message me if you have any more questions, Liberty!

Did you have any experience prior to applying?

Also this might sounds stupid but do every stores require an orientation before you can start working? (my manager never even mentioned ONCE about it) Just took a drug test today.

Mine is for CVS.

Every job I have ever had required some kind of orientation. Not sure how it is for CVS. I used to work at an indy pharmacy. Started out volunteering and the pharmacist needed someone on a prn basis so I accepted.

Congrats. Hospital is where its at.👍

Thanks. I shadowed there before and love the environment. I am really excited.

Yes, CVS has a very extensive 16 weeks of training period...I was at first scared and everything seemed so confusing but as we go on working, you start getting clear on what s what and why...it s amazing how they work in the pharmacy!!!

Hm yeah, guess those 16 weeks never happened for me. 🙄

I was hired after informal interview, drug test, computer stuff to go through at home, straight into first day. Of course, I'm talking about working pretty much as a clerk and not technician so I got a 5 minute pep talk on how to use their cash register.. but eventually gained more responsibilities slowly.

Throughout the course of working, they do ask you to take a few classes to work towards being a licensed tech though, but they pay you for the hours you're in class and also pay for you license exam. Nothing to lose really.

Btw, I'm in Cali.

I was also told about taking those classes. And they're like 20 mins away from my house🙁

Especially since I will be part time lol.
Congrats on the hospital job. Your going to love it. Hospital is 100x more involved than retail and they give you so much autonomy its ridiculous. I'll be in the IV room all day or out and about doing things in the hospital and no one is around ever. In retail, I couldn't even pick my nose if I wanted to without the boss seeing it...haha. Plus, hospital pay with different incentives is a bit ridiculous. I'm going in for a double right now, where I'll make time and a half + supplemental + shift diff for around $29/hr. Congrats again, good luck.

Well, I ended up having two interviews: one Sunday with the store hiring manager, and one today with the pharmacy manager. I think i did pretty good in both interviews, but I found out today they are interviewing at least two other people for this position as well. Since i don't have any work experience in pharmacy I'm not sure what my chances are. I'm supposed to get a call back tomorrow, so crossing my fingers :xf:

Are you all licensed pharm tech? I can't even get volunteering or shadowing positions without being certified. >:[
Maybe because I live in Texas and they have specific laws?

In TX, you need to be certified before you work as a tech. You need PTCB certification, but with TSBP, you can work on it while you're working as a tech.

I've passed the PTCB exam, so I'm certified. I don't know how far that will get me without having any real tech experience though....

Congrats on the hospital job, D!

Edit: As far as working in Texas, you can register with the TSBP like ShadowRx said. You'll need to register specifically as a "Tech in Training." I'm not sure what's required other than a minor fee.

When I first started volunteering I was neither certified nor was I even registered as a tech trainee. This was in the hospital though. As soon as I looked into getting a volunteering spot at an indy pharmacy then I registed with the BOP.

Thanks Pharm B. I am so excited. Plus I decided to stick around at the indy pharmacy since the pharmacist was so helpful to me.

Got the Job! In a couple weeks I'll be a full-time pharmacy technician 🙂. Only thing that sucks is they don't have any sort of training period, i just have to learn on the job. I imagine the first few weeks are gonna be insane.

Congrats!

I've been "thrown in the fire" for 2 out of my 3 tech jobs. You'll be fine. Remember to be confident and never be afraid to ask for help/ask questions about something.

Never interviewed at Walmart, but at CVS they asked situational questions...such as, how would you deal with a difficult employee, etc. Dress nice, smile, and make eye contact! Also show them you are passionate about the job. Good luck!

Thx for the advice, I'll do my best. Just might take a little while to acclimate.

Congrats...when do you start?

Thanks, I'm not sure of when I start yet. I'm supposed to get a call soon to come in for orientation, and then I'll be starting shortly after that.

Btw, congrats on the hospital job!

I'm in a similar situation! I've applied to at least 15 pharmacies this summer and just got my first interview! I've never had any pharm tech experience besides volunteering at a hospital pharmacy for 20 hours last summer. the manager also asked me if i was going back to school in the fall and such.
it's a small independent pharmacy so i'm hoping the interview will be better than say CVS/walgreen...etc?? do any of you work at an independent pharmacy?? how did your interview go??😕😕

You can register as a technician trainee without being certified. It will cost you a registration and fingerprinting fee though. The technician trainee license is good for two years. I believe you can't renew a technician trainee license though. You've got to become certified and apply for technician registration. Yep, that's how it works in Texas.

Honestly, it helps a lot when you have connections. I am currently still working at an indy pharmacy. I have some of my medications filled there and used to have a lot of conversations with the pharmacist. He's been one of my pharmacists for over 4 yrs now. Since he knew I was interested in becoming a pharmacist, he allowed me to volunteer there and once I got certified, he agreed to let me work there on a prn basis.

Oh thanks. I can't wait to start. I am really excited.😀
